Fans must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to attend U.S. Open

U.S. Open organizers had not planned to require guests to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to attend the event held in New York City.

That changed roughly 72 hours before the tournament's main draw that is set to begin Monday.

The United States Tennis Association announced Friday that fans 12 years of age or older must show proof of at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to attend the U.S. Open.

"We will be following CDC, New York State, and New York City COVID-19 related guidelines and the recent NYC Executive Orders to ensure that we can provide our fans with the same world-class experience they've come to expect while ensuring a safe environment for all," the USTA added.

Individuals can utilize the NYC COVID Safe App, an actual vaccination card, a photocopy of that card, the Excelsior Pass, or a different official immunization record to verify vaccination.

Additionally, masks are "recommended" everywhere indoors for all guests. "Certain indoor locations (e.g., retail stores) may require a mask for entry," the USTA said.

The USTA banned spectators from attending qualifying matches held ahead of Monday because of fears related to the virus.
