On Wednesday, Felix Auger-Aliassime pulled off an impressive turnaround, beating Ben Shelton in three sets at the ATP Finals.

The Canadian, who could be a real threat in Turin, came from behind to beat Shelton 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 at the Inalpi Arena.

He has looked strong throughout the back end of the season: making the US Open semi-finals, taking home the Brussels title, and then reaching the final in Paris.

A loss to Jannik Sinner in his opening round robin match had put Auger-Aliassime under early pressure in Turin.

But he bounced back well against Shelton, showing plenty of determination to grind out an important win and another milestone for his tally in 2025.

OptaAce notes that Auger-Aliassime is the second player, after Alex de Minaur, to reach 40 hard-court victories at ATP level in 2025.

The Canadian has now matched the mark, while De Minaur leads the way with 42 wins.

Sinner and Alcaraz are just behind, with the Italian on 35 wins and the Spaniard sitting at 36.

Auger-Aliassime, currently holding a 1-1 record at the Finals, is set to play his final round-robin match against Alexander Zverev.

Zverev leads their head-to-head meetings 6-3, but the Canadian will take heart from their most recent clash, which he won at the US Open: a four-set battle where he came from a set down to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Zverev also picked up an earlier victory this week over Ben Shelton, and lost to Jannik Sinner on Wednesday.

This could be Auger-Aliassime’s first time reaching the semi-finals of the year-end event. He fell short in his previous appearance, back in 2022.

Felix Auger-Aliassime’s unusual trend

An odd pattern has emerged in Auger-Aliassime’s matches at the ATP Finals, particularly highlighted after his recent win over Ben Shelton in Turin.

Across his five career appearances at the tournament, he has two wins and three losses. Both of those victories have come against left-handers – Rafael Nadal and Ben Shelton.

On the flip side, every one of his defeats at the event has come against right-handed opponents: Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz, and Jannik Sinner.
