In one of the biggest upsets of the US Open so far, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime has taken out world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the third round, scoring a four-set victory 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-4. After dropping the opening set, the Canadian showed resilience and composure unlike before, turning the match around with fearless shot-making.
The match began with both players exchanging early breaks, but Alexander Zverev steadied himself first, breaking once again and then using his serve to dictate the set, closing it out 6-4.
The second set was dominated by serving, with neither player offering much of an opening on return. A tiebreak felt inevitable, and when Zverev earned a set point to move ahead two sets to love, the match seemed to be slipping away from Felix Auger-Aliassime. But the Canadian held firm. After saving the German’s set point, a backhand pass and a fortunate netcord at one of his own turned the momentum, allowing him to snatch the set 7-6(9) and level the match.
Riding that surge of confidence, Auger-Aliassime immediately went on the offensive in the third set, breaking early and unleashing a barrage of forehand and backhand winners that kept Zverev on the back foot. The Canadian never relinquished control, and he carried that same momentum into the fourth set. Although Zverev initially fended off break points, his resistance finally cracked in the seventh game, where Auger-Aliassime broke to love. Just ten minutes later, he served out the match, finishing with over 40 winners in a stunning display of aggressive tennis to seal a four-set victory.
Having struggled to make an impact at the Majors this year, this win could serve as a turning point for Auger-Aliassime. He now has his first career victory over a Top 3 opponent at a Major, a much-needed confidence boost to remind him that he can still belong among the tennis elite.
Next up is Andrey Rublev in the Round of 16, and with the confidence and level of play he showed against Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime has every reason to believe he can keep his run alive.
