The tennis season is in its final quarter, and with less than two months before it ends, four tennis players will be playing no further part. Tennis is considered one of the healthiest sports, but it is also demanding for the mind and body.
At least six players took an indefinite break earlier this year, an occurrence that portrays the darker side of the sport. Beneath all the thrills and glamor of centre courts and record-breaking prize money lie months of strain, both mental and physical. Here are five names who decided to shut down their seasons.
Draper announced that he will miss the remainder of the season to focus on his recovery from a painful arm injury. The 23-year-old sustained the injury during the summer and pulled out from all warm-up tournaments leading to the US Open. Although Draper was cleared to play in New York, he only lasted one round. He won his opening match against Federico Agustin Gomez and then withdrew from the tournament. Draper’s premature end to the season means he won’t play at the ATP Finals, should he qualify.
Elina Svitolina ended her season shortly after Ukraine’s historic semifinal finish at the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. The former World No. 3 lost in four of her last five matches and took to Instagram to address her fans about the emotional turmoil she had been experiencing lately. Svitolina admitted that she needed time to “heal and recharge” and will be out of action for the rest of the year.
Joining Svitolina on the sidelines is Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Brazilian No. 1 is taking time away from tennis to recharge her batteries after an exhausting season. Haddad Maia won just 16 matches–her lowest return at this level since 2016. It could cost Haddad Maia a Top 50 year-end ranking.
Hubert Hurkacz has struggled to stay healthy in 2025, with the Pole featuring just 26 times. His last appearance was in early June at the Libema Open, where he was knocked out of the tournament in the first round. Efforts to return to competitive action did not bear any fruit, and the 28-year-old, who has since slipped out of the Top 50, hopes to rejoin the Tour in 2026.
Paula Badosa issued an update following her recent retirement at the China Open. The Spaniard’s chronic back injury continues to derail her momentum, and she is shutting down her season early for the second time in three seasons. She will most likely lose her Top 20 spot and is optimistic about returning to the Tour in 2026.
