Former World No.1 Reveals Why Emma Raducanu Has Begun to Have 'Some Good Matches' on Tour
Sipa Press

Emma Raducanu has immensely improved on her game since the Miami Open. Prior to that, she had only won one match in almost two months and was heavily criticized for her poor performances. Former World No.1 Chris Evert believes that things are starting to fall into place for the British star.

After the Australian Open, Raducanu had a run of one win in four tournaments. The former World No.1 was also dealing with some of her coaching situation, but got it temporarily solved after Andy Murray’s ex-coach Mark Petchey joined her team. Since then, there has been a turnaround in her game.

In fact, she’s on the verge of returning to the top 30 if she does continue with her form at the French Open. But all that began at the Miami Open, where she reached the quarter-finals, her best run at a WTA 1000 tournament, and she then made it to the second round of the Madrid Open before losing to Marta Kostyuk.

The 22-year-old then reached the fourth round of the Italian Open for the first time in her career. She’s currently competing at the Strasbourg Open and, for the first time ever, defeated Daria Kasatkina on tour 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round of the tournament.

During an interview, Chris Evert revealed that the reason for Raducanu’s transformation on the court this season is that she’s more settled and now understands her goals. She added that the British star has a good awareness of her style of play. Evert said via Express:

I think I’ve seen some good matches from Emma. I think she seems to have the mental part of the game and the emotional part of the game. She seems to have that. She seems to be more settled, and she seems to really know what her goals are, and she seems to know what she needs to work on and what her strengths and weaknesses are. She has a very good awareness of her game, and she knows what to do.

Raducanu revealed after her win against Kasatkina that she has begun to like playing on clay more and more. That shows a change of mentality from the 22-year-old, who in previous seasons skipped the clay season. This year, she has competed in three clay tournaments and looks set to participate in the Roland Garros.

Chris Evert says Emma Raducanu has begun to show signs of promise after years of struggle

Emma Raducanu’s career took a sharp turn after she stunned the tennis world by winning the US Open in 2021 as a qualifier. She won 10 matches in a row without dropping a set and rose to the World No.10 in the WTA rankings after the historic feat. That catapulted her fame, and she got several endorsement and sponsorship deals.

But after those highs came the lows in 2022 and 2023 as she struggled to compete and put together a decent run of results. She also underwent surgery on both wrists and one ankle, which saw her sidelined for a long period. Chris Evert added during the aforementioned interview that Raducanu looks committed this season after experiencing the struggles.

She’s a young lady that has been injured so many times. I just feel so bad for these players that just keep getting out of the game. They start to play really well and then they get injured and it’s got to take its toll on you. But I think she’s showing some good signs, showing some promise, and when I look at it, when I watch her matches, you can see it in her eyes that she’s 100 per cent committed this time around.

Raducanu has also not sustained any major injury this season. Last year, she was in and out of the tour due to injuries, but she has now gotten back to full fitness on tour, which has also influenced her performance.
