We have reached the quarterfinals in Paris, as the stars will be out during the second week of the 2025 French Open. Three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek squares off against No. 13 seed Elina Svitolina, and World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will do battle with Qinwen Zheng. Ilemona Onekutu, Jordan Reynolds, and Shane Black offer their insights. But who will advance to the semifinals?
Ilemona
Sabalenka will be better prepared to avoid another shocker after their last meeting in Rome. She’s dominated their rivalry (6-1 H2H) and has been crushing opponents in Paris without dropping a set. Zheng pulled off the upset in Rome, but Sabalenka’s power game is built for these big stages. The Chinese star might hang tough early, but Aryna’s firepower will likely overwhelm in the end. Don’t expect another shocker here.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Jordan
Zheng needs to play better than her previous round against Liudmila Samsonova to have a chance against the world No. 1. However, I have a feeling Zheng could stun Sabalenka. The Chinese star’s best chance against her by far is on a clay-court that is not too fast, as fans saw when she beat Sabalenka in Rome a few weeks ago. I also think Zheng’s chances before the tournament were written off by too many, and she could prove some doubters wrong by standing strong against Sabalenka’s powerful hitting.
Prediction: Zheng in 3
Shane
Zheng conquered the clay in Paris at the 2024 Olympics and has seemingly carried that momentum to the 2025 French Open. However, her level must rise considerably if she wants to compete with Sabalenka. Although this is arguably the World No. 1’s worst surface, she has yet to drop a set in Paris. Her power is piercing the clay and should once again pay dividends against Zheng.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Ilemona
Iga Swiatek should handle this. She’s won 25 straight matches at Roland Garros, owns a 3-1 H2H edge (all on clay), and just survived a brutal test against Rybakina. Svitolina’s scrappy, but her counterpunching struggles against Iga’s heavy spin. If Svitolina steals a set, it’ll be from pure grit, but don’t count on it.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Jordan
Swiatek’s recovery from 1-6 0-2 against Elena Rybakina could be one of the most important moments of her career. Not just because it keeps her hopes of a fourth consecutive title alive, but she did it by playing at a level reminiscent of her dominant self before the last 12 months. Svitolina had a terrific comeback of her own against Jasmine Paolini, saving three match points. However, I think Swiatek will capitalize on the momentum she has built to win this match.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Shane
It has been an up-and-down season for Iga Swiatek, by her standards. However, she is the Queen of Roland Garros and is brimming with confidence after overcoming a set deficit in the Round of 16 against Rybakina. Svitolina is coming off an impressive upset win over Jasmine Paolini to reach the French Open quarters for the fifth time in her career. The Ukrainian must play a near-perfect match to reach the semis. I’ll back Swiatek here.
Prediction: Swiatek in 3
