Stefanos Tsitsipas’ career has continued its downward slope after he withdrew from his opening round match at the Wimbledon Championship. The Greek star has won only one match since his partnership with coach Goran Ivanisevic and the Croatian has sent strong words to the Greek star about his lack of effort on the court.
Tsitsipas has hired Ivanisevic to help catapult his career back to the top 10 of the ATP after he had dropped from the elite group this season. He had also dropped out of the top 20 after losing to Matteo Gigante in the second round of the French Open. He was seeking to bounce back with the help of the Croatian coach, but things have not gone as planned.
The 26-year-old opened his grass-court campaign at the Terra Wortmann Open and won just one match before losing to Alex Michelsen. However, there were hopes that the 2001 Wimbledon champion would help the Greek star at the All England Club. But during his opening match at the struggled with a back injury.
In fact, during the early stages of the match against Valentin Royer, the No.24 seed was down 2-6, 2-6 before retiring from the match. His performance was contrary to the enthusiasm he showed at the press conference ahead of the game, as he was the clear favorite to win the clash, but he showed no effort.
During an interview with Sport Klub, Ivanisevic was very furious at Tsitsipas’ effort during the match. He revealed that he was shocked at the level of performance that the 26-year-old showed on the court. He added that he doesn’t do anything to get back into the Top 10, which is his goal:
He wants, but he doesn’t do anything. All ‘I want, I want’, but I don’t see that progress. I was shocked. I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad. It’s simple and it’s not simple. I’ve talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he’ll return to where he belongs, because he’s too good a player to be out of the top 10.
Tsitsipas is among the 1990s generation of players who have failed to win a Grand Slam. He began his career very brilliantly and was even dubbed to take over from Roger Federer (especially due to his playing style) but his lack of consistency has been his undoing. He will now hope to return from his back injury stronger than ever.
Since winning his first ATP 500 title in Dubai, Stefanos Tsitsipas has struggled to be at his best level on the court. The Greek star has managed to reach only two quarter-finals since then and has not gotten past that stage. Also, in Grand Slam tournaments, he has won just one match this season.
After his exit from the Wimbledon Championship, the former World No.3 gave a scathing verdict about his struggling career. He pointed out that he’s currently fighting many wars, which have been painful to bear:
I’m battling many wars these days. It’s really painful to see myself in a situation like this. I feel like I’m left without answers. I don’t know. I’ve tried everything. I’ve done an incredible job with my fitness. I’ve done an incredible job with my physiotherapy, so I’ve maximized on everything that I possibly can do. Right now, I’m just absolutely left with no answers.
Tsitsipas has dropped to World No.26 in the ATP rankings following his early exit from Wimbledon. The Greek star is set to drop further in the rankings as the tournament continues and might find himself outside the Top 30 after the Championship.
