Serena Williams’ return to tennis has been a hot topic, and fans recently got another update on her potential comeback.

After spending six months in the anti-doping testing pool, Williams became eligible to play again from the 22nd of February.

The American stepped away from tennis at the 2022 US Open, explaining in a Vogue article that she wanted to ‘evolve’ beyond the sport. Her former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has said he would be surprised if Williams returned to the WTA Tour.

Now, former US Open finalist Greg Rusedski has weighed in on the situation and shared his thoughts on whether Williams could compete again.

During an episode of ‘Off Court with Greg,’ Rusedski said: “I’m still shocked by it. Any time a great champion wants to come back, it’s great for our sport, especially with what Serena accomplished.

“She looks in great shape. The question is, how’s the tennis game, and how’s the movement?

“You’ve got to look at the WTA Tour at the moment, Mboko. She’s playing great tennis right now. Rybakina winning the Australian Open, and Sabalenka. They’re playing some fierce tennis right now.

“So, with the comeback, it’ll be interesting if she comes in singles. She’s only going to come back if she feels like she can beat them.

“That is the question mark for me. I’m sure she’s going to come back and at least play doubles, but I would love to see what happens in singles, and everybody is intrigued.

“So singles, fascinating. Reality, I think possibly doubles.”

Serena Williams’ final run at the 2022 US Open

Williams wrapped up her playing career at the 2022 US Open, where she took part in both singles and doubles.

She began her singles campaign with a straight-sets victory over Danka Kovinic before pulling off an upset against second seed Anett Kontaveit.

Teaming up with Venus for one last doubles match, the sisters fell to Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6, 6-4.

Serena’s final singles appearance came in the third round against Ajla Tomljanovic. She battled hard to force a decider but came up short in the end.
