Some of the biggest names in tennis battled it out for the $1 million prize in Melbourne.

But it wasn’t Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, or Iga Swiatek who pocketed an extra $1 million.

Instead, amateur Jordan Smith won the prize, defeating Joanna Garland in the final.

The event received many positive reviews, and will surely attract even more fans should it return in 2027.

Weighing in with his thoughts, Greg Rusedski gave his verdict on the One Point Slam.

Greg Rusedski says he ‘quite liked’ the One Point Slam

During the latest episode of ‘Off Court with Greg‘, the former world number four had this to say about the Australian Open warm-up event.

“Well, I quite liked it, to be honest. I thought what a life-changing moment for Jordan Smith,” he said.

“You think he might get a house, get a flat, wins $1 million.

“Jannik Sinner double-faulted, and then in the finals, you saw the backhand miss from [Joanna] Garland, so there was a lot of pressure.

“But I’m so happy for him, because all of a sudden, he gets into this spotlight, he was a good college player, and that’s just life-changing.”

Rusedski is pleased to see the Grand Slams try different concepts and events before the real tournament begins.

“I think you’ve got to try these new concepts before the tournament,” he said.

“Like the US Open, they did the mixed doubles competition, bringing a lot of the big names in. I thought that was super successful.

“This again, Tennis Australia, just said let’s try something new, they brought a lot of fans in and made a life-changing moment for somebody.

“I’m all for these changes before the tournament starts.”

Rusedski then looked ahead to the next Grand Slam, questioning whether the French Open will follow suit…

Greg Rusedski’s French Open question

“It’ll be fascinating to see this concept continue,” he said.

“Will they do it at Roland Garros, as well? The next Slam.

“It will be interesting to see what they add on, because it started with the US Open, now it’s happened down under with the new concept.

“What is the new concept going to be for the next coming Slam? And that is the big question mark.

“Will they copy this one? Will they copy the mixed doubles from the US Open? Or will they bring us something new?

Only time will tell what the French Open will do, but it will certainly be something to look out for.

The 2026 French Open is scheduled to begin on May 18.
