Grigor Dimitrov out of US Open 2025 due to pectoral tear: First Grand Slam absence since 2010

It has been confirmed that Grigor Dimitrov has sustained an injury and will miss the upcoming US Open 2025, marking the first time the Bulgarian will miss a Grand Slam main draw since 2010. The former world No. 3 has struggled with injuries over the past couple of seasons, retiring in his last five appearances at major tournaments.

According to his coach Georgi Stoimenov, Dimitrov will have to take time off the courts to recover from a partial tear of his pectoralis major, which forced him to retire during Wimbledon, when he had world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on the brink in the 4th round.

Dimitrov was two sets up against Sinner when, during a rally, he suffered a regrettable pectoral injury that forced him to retire, just when he seemed close to delivering the tournament's biggest upset. Dimitrov exited injured, and Sinner eventually ended up claiming the title, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

This was the 5th consecutive occasion that Dimitrov had exited a Grand Slam due to injury.

A troubling trend: Dimitrov becomes first player to retire from 5 consecutive Grand Slams

At Wimbledon 2024, Dimitrov reached the fourth round and retired due to injury when he was down in the first set against Daniil Medvedev (3-5). That same year, the Bulgarian reached the US Open quarterfinals and retired during the 4th set against Frances Tiafoe (3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 1-4).

This year, Dimitrov attended the Australian Open at the start of the season as the 10th seed, and fell in the first round to lucky loser Francesco Passaro, retiring with the score 5-7, 1-2. The same would repeat in the first round of Roland Garros this year, when he was contesting the fourth set against qualifier Ethan Quinn with a score of 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 0-0.

At Wimbledon, he became the first player in history to retire in 5 consecutive Grand Slams due to injuries. He had defeated Yoshito Nishioka, Corentin Moutet, and Sebastian Ofner on his way, only to be eliminated against Sinner due to a pectoral injury (6-3, 7-5, 2-2, ret.).

Dimitrov's injury layoff extends

Initially, a quick recovery for Dimitrov was expected, who had only announced his withdrawal from the Canadian Open. Shortly after, he announced that he would also not be in the Cincinnati Open – which starts next week – so his eventual return at the US Open was anticipated.

Unfortunately for the world No. 19, his time off the courts will have to be extended. Coach Georgi Stoimenov confirmed in a conversation with Tenniskafe that he will not be 100% ready to play the US Open, so they decided he will not return to the tournament this year, where he is defending a good sum of points after reaching the quarterfinals in 2024.

With this, it is practically guaranteed that Dimitrov will fall out of the top 30 once play concludes at Flushing Meadows. Dimitrov will once again have to look to climb back from a lower ranking. He is expected to return to the courts between late September and early October, in the Asian swing, with tournaments like the China Open or Shanghai Masters as his most probable scenarios for a comeback, although his physical condition still needs to be monitored.

Since 2011, Dimitrov had appeared uninterruptedly in every Grand Slam main draw until now, meaning on 58 consecutive occasions. In that period, Dimitrov achieved 100 wins and 59 losses, with two semifinal appearances (Australian Open 2017, US Open 2019) and four other quarterfinal appearances.

Grigor Dimitrov joins Hubert Hurkacz as the first confirmed withdrawals from the upcoming US Open. This news comes just days after the Pole confirmed he would undergo surgery that will keep him off the courts for several months.
