Grigor Dimitrov has withdrawn from the French Open after an injury prevented him from finishing his match against Ethan Quinn. The Bulgarian was up two sets to one and decided to retire after losing the third set, marking his fourth consecutive Grand Slam match he has failed to complete.
Dimitrov arrived at Roland Garros as the 16th seed with high ambitions for a strong performance. The former world No. 3 had his best showing in Paris a year ago, reaching the quarterfinals, where he ultimately fell to Italian Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
Since that quarterfinal, Dimitrov's subsequent four Grand Slam appearances have all ended in injury withdrawals, with him taking to the court but unable to finish the match.
At Wimbledon 2024, he couldn't finish the first set against Daniil Medvedev (3-5, ret.) in the fourth round. Then, at the US Open 2024 (quarterfinals), he retired during the fourth set against Frances Tiafoe (3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 1-4, ret.). The problems continued at the Australian Open earlier this year, when he couldn't complete his match against Italian lucky loser Francesco Passaro (5-7, 1-2, ret.).
This time against Quinn, Dimitrov was leading 6-2, 6-3, 2-6. He appeared to be struggling physically in the third set, and once the set concluded, he decided to retire, allowing American qualifier Quinn to advance to the second round. This is Quinn's first time reaching the second round of a major.

Hard to see this.
He’s retired at the last 4 Grand Slams.
He was in complete control of this match before the injury.
Hoping to see him healthy on the grass. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/CKFRGxvmqp
