Former Spanish player Feliciano Lopez believes that Jannik Sinner has all the skills to go all the way and challenge for the Wimbledon title. The second Grand Slam of the year will begin on June 30 in London.
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz will be defending his title, which he lifted last year after beating Novak Djokovic in the final with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. Alcaraz’s most prominent opponent in this year’s competition will be Italy’s Sinner, who is also ranked number one in men’s tennis.
Both players featured in an epic five-set thrilling final of the French Open earlier this year, where Alcaraz came out on top with a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. The match lasted more than five hours and became officially the second-longest Grand Slam final in the history of tennis in the Open era.
Sinner will enter the upcoming Grand Slam as the top-seeded player despite never having played in the final of the competition. However, that does not appear to be a problem for former world number 12 Lopez, who still believes that Sinner has all the tools to be successful at Wimbledon this year. Lopez, who won the French Open doubles title in 2016, also stated that he is ‘not at all’ surprised to see Alcaraz and Sinner dominate men’s tennis.
"I think so [Sinner will be successful at Wimbledon], yes,” he said while talking to Sky Sports, which was published on June 23. “His movement on the court is out of this world. To play on grass you need good movement and he's probably one of the best movers on court right now. He has the movement, he has the serve, he has one of the best returns I've seen, so yes! He has almost everything. No, not at all [surprised to see Alcaraz and Sinner dominate]. They not only have the tennis skills, technically and physically they are probably the best in the world. But also their mentality and their ability to sustain that level for so long. We saw that in the French Open final when they were playing for five-and-a-half hours at the highest possible intensity. There are players in the game right now who can play one or two sets, but Sinner and Alcaraz have the ability to play at that super-high intensity for so long and I've not seen anyone else who can do that."
Au revoir, Paris
