Goran Ivanisevic, former coach of Novak Djokovic, has revealed the key reasons why the Serbian couldn't overcome Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals. The Croatian coach is one of those who knows Djokovic best, having worked with him for 10 of the 24 Grand Slam titles Nole has won in his career.
After their split in March 2024, Djokovic has never quite found his level again and hasn't secured another major title. In 2023, Djokovic won 3 of the 4 Grand Slams with Ivanisevic as his coach, but since their separation in 2024, Nole hasn't been able to expand his major trophy cabinet. Two major contenders have frustrated his aspirations: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Indeed, since Ivanisevic's departure, the clear dominators of the Tour have been Sinner and Alcaraz, who have split the last seven major tournaments and, in fact, contested the most recent Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals against each other. This year, Djokovic has achieved good campaigns in the Slams, but he has now fallen three consecutive times in semifinals, all against the Italian Sinner.
Regarding this, Ivanisevic closely followed what happened this time at Wimbledon – a tournament Ivanisevic himself won in 2001. According to the Croatian coach, he believed this could be Nole's opportunity to break the negative streak against Sinner, although it ended up being another straight-sets victory for the Italian, currently World No. 1, who two days later claimed the Wimbledon title against Alcaraz.
"When you are not 100% with Sinner, and even when you are, your chances are not many," Goran Ivanisevic commented regarding Djokovic's semifinal match. "I thought Novak could do it, but unfortunately, he was not entirely ready. Djokovic is the best tennis player of all time, but what these two are doing is another level of tennis."
"Sinner is better, tougher. I don't know what tactics I would use against him; he has an answer for everything. He returns, strengthens, and wins the tournament."
The Croatian coach, who currently works with Stefanos Tsitsipas, commented that both Sinner and Alcaraz are far ahead of the rest of the players and that, for now, only Djokovic truly has the ability to beat them.
However, Nole hasn't been able to match them over the past couple of seasons, something which, according to the legendary Serbian himself, is partly because he can no longer compete physically in the same way as before. It's worth remembering that Nole is already 38 years old, while Sinner (23) and Alcaraz (22) are in an almost unbeatable physical condition.
Both stars, in fact, starred in an epic 5.5-hour final at Roland Garros in early June, one of the longest in history, where the Spaniard claimed the title in a fifth-set tie-break after saving up to three match points in the fourth set. Later, in their Wimbledon encounter just over a month later, Sinner took revenge, though this time in four sets, marking certain differences from what happened in Paris in terms of game development.
"This was a back-and-forth final. Sinner was better and, in my opinion, he is currently a slightly superior player to Alcaraz," stated Ivanisevic. "Both are five lashes ahead of the rest. The only one who could compete with them is Novak Djokovic, but the others have no chance."
