'He’s mentality and physically super strong,' Jannik Sinner receives lauding praise from Serbian WTA legend
Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Italian young star, Jannik Sinner , is receiving praise from all parts of the world following his 2024 Australian Open triumph. Ana Ivanovic has hailed Jannik Sinner‘s mentality and physicality following his comeback victory against Daniil Medvedev to win the Australian Open title. The Italian, who has been in amazing form since last October, has only lost twice winning 26 matches out of 28.

He beat Novak Djokovic‘s 33-match win streak in Melbourne, defeating the Serbian 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the semifinals. He is the only player to defeat the top-3 players thrice in less than six months, leaving him as one of the favorite players to watch at 22.

Against this backdrop, Ana Ivanovic, who won her first and only Grand Slam at the 2008 French Open, told reporters that Jannik Sinner will win more Grand Slam titles if he keeps doing what he’s doing.

It was incredible. The way he played the whole tournament. He really showed mental strength and endurance. The way he strikes the ball with such a sweet spot was great to watch. Ivanovic via Ubitennis

She further elaborated:

He has a really good overall game style. He is mentally and physically super strong. If he just keeps doing what he is doing there are many more Grand Slam titles for him. I really enjoy watching him. He seems like a very nice person, which is very beautiful to see.

Jannik Sinner is already a popular figure in his native Italy, with thousands cheering him when he first defeated Novak Djokovic at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. In November, he helped his country win their first Davis Cup title in over 30 years, prompting a celebrated visit to Quirinal Palace, where he was greeted with his team by President Sergio Mattarella.

Jannik Sinner to compete at the ABN AMRO Open

Sinner is set to return to action at the ATP 500 ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. The Italian withdrew from the Open 13 Provence in Marseille after winning the Australian Open, with the need to for more time to recover.

In 2023, he played at the Open 13 championship after losing out of the Melbourne title challenge in the fourth round and has also opted to skip his title defense in Montpelier this week. Last year, he featured in 21 tournaments winning five ATP titles. However, that number would lessen this year following his first Grand Slam win.

Jannik Sinner is also likely to feature in the Indian Wells Open in March as well as Novak Djokovic. Hopefully, another Australian Open semifinal-like contest awaits tennis fans. The ABN AMRO Open starts on the 12th of February.
