Holger Rune is set for Hamburg Open return after Achilles injury

Holger Rune is set to make his comeback at the Hamburg Open next month, following a long spell out with an Achilles injury.

The injury occurred during the semifinals of last year’s Stockholm Open, where Rune broke the proximal part of his Achilles. He had surgery shortly after, which was reported to have gone well.

Since then, he’s been keeping fans updated on social media, sharing clips and updates about his training.

During his time away from the tour, Rune’s ranking has slipped to world No. 29.

His recovery timeline has been swift, but there are growing concerns among fans that he might be pushing himself too soon.

How fans responded to the news of Holger Rune’s return

One fan, commenting on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted: “He’s insane. He shouldn’t even think of playing pro until at least November.”

Another added: “Rune is about to compete after 7 months from the torn Achilles he suffered in October. I saw that he was putting a lot of effort into the recovery and rehab, but I wonder if his return to the courts isn’t a bit rushed. Hope everything is good and he will be able to compete.”

Others shared similar thoughts, with one saying: “Well, praying for him. Sounds pretty early, it would be a tragedy to get re-injured,” while another kept it short: “Please don’t [return].”

Another comment read: “Hopefully it’s not a hasty return for his own sake. This is a really quick recovery, honestly, for that kind of injury.”

Holger Rune Eager for Return: “I Can’t Wait”

Speaking to the official Hamburg Open website, Rune said: “The hard work starts in Hamburg. I can’t wait to be back on clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and to finally experience the atmosphere on site again after such a long break.”

Tournament director Enric Molina Mur also commented on Rune’s return, saying: “We are very pleased that Holger Rune will make his comeback with us in Hamburg.

“I know how much work he has put into this intensive rehabilitation period, and we feel honoured that he has chosen the Bitpanda Hamburg Open for his return.

“I am confident that he will once again experience the special atmosphere at Rothenbaum, both from the Hamburg crowd and from the many Danish fans who will travel to the city.”
