How Sinner’s early Masters success compares to Djokovic

That’s right. By the time he turned 25, Djokovic already had 11 Masters 1000 titles under his belt.

Many now consider him to be the greatest men’s player of all time, and his early success in the Masters series is a big part of why. His first came at Miami in 2007, beating Guillermo Canas in the final, before adding another later that year at the Canadian Open.

He added two more in 2008 at Indian Wells and Rome. In 2009, he picked up another by winning Paris.

He didn’t win any Masters titles in 2010 but made up for it with an incredible run the following year.

The Serbian won his first three titles at Miami, Monte-Carlo and Madrid between March and May of that year. He claimed two more by August, securing victories at both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters within a week of each other.

Sinner now has six titles on hard courts. Two from Canada (2021-23), plus singles wins at Indian Wells (2024), Shanghai (2023), Miami (2023) and Toronto (2021).

When Djokovic won the 2007 Miami Masters, he became the youngest player ever to take the title.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Djokovic said: “It feels great. It feels great. Every time you win something or you are the youngest player or you make any record, I mean, it certainly feels great.

“It means that your name is in the history of the sport. I am very proud of that.

“I know that I worked hard throughout all my career to reach this point, and I hope that this is just the beginning of a long career, I hope.

“You know, there is always these injuries which are a big factor, and a big problem in the sport in general, especially in tennis where you need to take care of your whole body.

“I hope I’ll stay healthy and have a long career.”
