'I am not a robot,' Andy Murray gives bizzare reason for his ‘strange’ fake laughter on court
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

British tennis ace Andy Murray did not look like his usual self during his first-round match at the 2024 Miami Open as he faced Matteo Berrettini. Although the 36-year-old registered a thrilling win despite losing the opening set, Murray made headlines for his unusual on-court behavior.

The three-time Grand Slam champion was captured fake laughing on multiple occasions and when Murray was asked about the same, he came up with a bizarre explanation. The Briton blamed the reporter who asked the question for his on-court behavior.

Murray also took a hit at his criticism saying that whatever he does on the court is pointed out. The 36-year-old then said that he is not a robot and that he plays better when he is like that.

You were saying I need to be happier on the court in the interview beforehand. So if I'm laughing, that's not ok. If I'm shouting, that's not ok. If I'm flat like I was in Australia, that's not ok. So it's very hard for me to get the balance right. I'm very different on the tennis court. I'm not a robot, I'm a bit odd, a bit strange, but I play better when I'm like that. Andy Murray said to Sky Sports.

Andy Murray got a win and that matters more!

While he received flak for his unusual on-court behavior, Andy Murray was terrific in his game on Wednesday. The 36-year-old did a great job to bounce back after losing the opening set. Murray clinched the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and set himself a second-round clash with Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The three-time Grand Slam champion was happy about his level against Matteo Berrettini. Murray analyzed his game well and said that he “played a smart match”.

I think in terms of the way I played and the important moments in that match, I did a good job. I moved well, and dictated a lot of the match, which isn't easy against him. Once I got the balance right against him, I felt like I dictated a lot of the points. I played a smart match when I needed to. Andy Murray said.

Notably, this was Murray’s top win of the season and the Briton looked in better shape than he was a couple of months back. Now, as he gears up to face Etcheverry, Murray will have the match against the Argentine at the 2024 Australian Open in the back of his head.

The Briton lost in three sets. He will look to avenge that defeat and make it to the third round of a tournament, which will be a first this season.

The Argentine has enjoyed an upper hand over Murray in the past two meetings. However, the 36-year-old had defeated Etcheverry when the two players met at the Indian Wells Open last year. Murray will be hoping to repeat that performance.
