'I do believe that I can get back to the top': Bianca Andreescu’s resurrection starts in Roland Garros

Bianca Andreescu expressed her high expectations for her return to the courts at Roland Garros, following a resounding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Yao Xinxin. The former US Open champion remains hopeful of putting her name among the best again, after a long injury that kept her off the courts since October 2024.

At 24 years old, Andreescu has spent much of her career battling injuries. After a remarkable 2019, when she won the US Open title and WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and the Canadian Open, Andreescu never quite consistently found her footing on Tour, alternating big wins with long periods out due to injury.

The Canadian's return was expected a couple of months ago at Indian Wells and Miami Open, but she ultimately decided to postpone it, needing more recovery time before returning to the court. Finally, it was in Rouen in mid-April that 'Bibi' returned, playing four tournaments prior to Roland Garros – all on clay courts. A potential wildcard was expected for the former Grand Slam champion, but she ultimately had to enter through the qualifying rounds, from which Andreescu seeks to draw the positive side.

"Playing more matches is kind of what I wanted, so in a way I guess the universe rewarded me," she said after her debut at Roland Garros this Monday. "I do believe that I can get back to the top, and I think I showed that last week. I have no time to waste, for me it’s not like it’s now or never because I know I’m still only 24, but I see all these youngsters doing well and I’m like ahh [expresses alarm] because I’ve been on the tour for quite a while, like six years, right?"

The Canadian has been plagued by a recurring back injury throughout her career, but she is now seeking all kinds of help to avoid relapses. She even became a follower of fitness guru David Asprey, known as the 'father of biohacking'. "Whatever I can do to control the controllables, I will do. That’s me, my attitude, what I put in my body, all this stuff. It’s such a good feeling, having the routines, the physio, the fitness and really feeling confident in that – it’s like the best feeling ever, and I think I’m finally there."

"Before I never looked at myself as Bianca Andreescu, the person," Andreescu added. "I always saw myself as Bianca Andreescu the tennis player and I identified myself too much with that and so when I would win, it was okay, and when I would lose it was the end of the world."

"Switching my mindset on and saying ‘If I can make three people smile today, or hold the door for someone,' just little things like that. For me, I do believe in good karma as well, but it’s also just for the soul, because we’re all here to help each other out in any way that we can."
