After Aryna Sabalenka made some controversial claims following her loss to American Coco Gauff at the 2025 French Open final, Madison Keys believes her countrywoman is not bothered by the Belarusian's comments.
The Atlanta native rallied from a set down to defeat the World No.1 in a thrilling final at Roland Garros, capturing her second overall Grand Slam title in the process. However, Sabalenka did not give Gauff a lot of credit for the win in her post-match conference, claiming the wind played a factor in her playing badly. Furthermore, the Belarusian stated that Polish star Iga Swiatek would have defeated Gauff and won the title had she played in Sabalenka's place.
When informed of Sabalenka's comments, Gauff maintained her usual class, giving the Belarusian the benefit of the doubt and stating the words were probably spoken in the heat of the moment. Keys would chime in a few days later, affirming that Gauff was not bothered by anything said by Sabalenka.
"To be honest, I don’t think I would really care, especially if I had won, no matter what they say or think," said Keys in a press conference at last week's WTA event in Queen's. "It’s tough. It’s a complicated, emotional moment, and I think sometimes emotions bring everything out of people. Things are said in a way and not necessarily meant seriously.
"Other times, you feel very disappointed with yourself because you haven’t played at the level you expected. I think sometimes it’s hard to overcome those moments, especially if you have a microphone in front of you. Sometimes we say things we later regret. Again, I don’t think Coco would care."
Sabalenka, Gauff and Keys are all scheduled to compete at this week's Berlin Ladies Open, as they finalize their grass court preparations before Wimbledon.
