'I don’t think…,' Iga Swiatek talks about her rivalry with Aryna Sabalenka and if it will go in history books
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has been at the top of her game for the last few years and the results reveal the story. However, there is one player who has challenged the Polish ace and that is Belarusian ace Aryna Sabalenka . She has been consistently threatening to take away the World No.1 rankings and Sabalenka even did it for a brief period last year.

This rivalry between the two WTA stars is often talked about and Swiatek was asked to share her cents on this matchup. She was asked if she thinks this rivalry will go down as one of the fiercest on the WTA tour in the history books.

Swiatek said that while people keep talking about such things, the two players are definitely not concerned about whether their rivalry will go into the history books. The World No. 1, however, acknowledged that they have been playing well and will continue to face each other in important matches.

We’ll see about if it's going to go to the history books, because honestly, I don't think either I or Aryna are focusing on that. We are more focusing on our own journeys. But for sure if you are going to play well, and we are playing well consistently, we will face each other in important matches. I think it's great, because, she's been No. 2 for a long time and she has already proven that she can play great tennis. Iga Swiatek said about her rivalry with Aryna Sabalenka.

Iga Swiatek says she and Aryna Sabalenka need each other

Iga Swiatek further talked about her rivalry with Aryna Sabalenka and said that the two players need each other to grow. The World No. 1 said that they push each other whenever they play against each other and it is exciting for the fans.

Swiatek then came back to the original question about their rivalry going into history books and said that the fans would play a big role in making this rivalry a historic one.

For sure when we play against each other, I feel like it's a challenge. I think it's also pushing me to become a better and better player, so I think we both kind of need each other to grow. But for sure this rivalry is exciting for the fans, as well. I guess if it's going to go to history books, they're also going to have some impact on it. Iga Swiatek said.

Notably, Swiatek and Sabalenka have faced each other 11 times on the WTA Tour. The Polish ace has enjoyed a decent lead with the head-to-head scorecard reading 8-3 in her favor. She has won most of her matches against Sabalenka in straight sets. Nevertheless, the Belarusian has managed to push Swiatek to her limits on other few occasions.
