'I don't understand'- Jack Sock voices doubts over Holger Rune and Andre Agassi collaboration

In a tennis world constantly brimming with coaching changes, surprise collaborations, and comeback narratives, one of the most intriguing headlines this week came from Washington D.C., where Holger Rune and Andre Agassi were spotted working together.

The Danish star and American legend reportedly spent three days on court, sparking rumours of a budding partnership, but not everyone is convinced.

One such sceptic is former American ace Jack Sock. Speaking candidly on the latest episode of the Nothing Major podcast, Sock did not hold back:

"I don’t understand why so many players do this trial period with their coach," Sock said. "What is a three-day trial period for? My feeling is that Agassi worked with him even before Washington.".

Sock’s comments have reignited debate over Rune’s career trajectory and the unconventional way in which elite players are now approaching coaching relationships.

While a three day stint with a tennis icon like Agassi might sound like a promising start, it’s raised eyebrows across the ATP landscape, not just because of its brevity, but because of what it suggests about Rune’s ongoing search for stability.

There’s no denying Holger Rune’s raw talent. At just 22 years old, he’s already established himself as one of the sport’s most explosive young players.

After winning his first Masters 1000 title at the Paris Masters in 2022, beating five top-10 players en route, expectations soared. Many believed Rune would be the next breakout star to join the ranks of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

However fast forward to 2025, and Rune’s rise has hit more than a few speed bumps.

Injuries have plagued his development, and more significantly, he’s become somewhat notorious for his revolving door of coaches. From Patrick Mouratoglou to Boris Becker, Rune’s team has seen frequent changes, with no long-term partnership sticking. The latest flirtation with Agassi now appears to be falling into the same category: short-lived, speculative, and potentially unstable.

After a promising run to the final of Indian Wells in March, defeating Medvedev and Tsitsipas along the way before being thumped 6-2, 6-2 by Jack Draper, many thought Rune had found his stride. Yet inconsistency crept back in almost immediately.

In Barcelona, he rediscovered his magic. Rune stormed through the field, defeating Casper Ruud, Karen Khachanov, and a red-hot Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(6), 6-2 in the final to lift the trophy. It was his biggest win since 2022’s Paris-Bercy title and looked like a career reset.

Unfortunately, that momentum did not last.

At the French Open, Rune reached the fourth round but was outplayed by Lorenzo Musetti in four sets. Despite gritty five-set wins earlier in the tournament, including a wild comeback against Quentin Halys, Rune’s run fell short of expectations.

Grass season proved just as uneven. He had a solid start at Queen’s Club, reaching the quarterfinals with wins over Christopher O’Connell and Mackenzie McDonald before falling to Roberto Bautista-Agut. At Wimbledon, however, disaster struck: Rune blew a two-set lead in the first round to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, losing 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Nevertheless, Andre Agassi, the eight-time Grand Slam champion, has kept quiet about the nature of the Washington link-up. Speaking about the experience, Rune himself expressed excitement about working with one of his childhood idols: "He sees the game in a unique way that I have never experienced before.".

If Agassi becomes that anchor or another name in Rune’s coaching carousel is a story still unfolding.

Whether those few days were the start of something bigger or simply a moment of inspiration remains to be seen, but in the ever-dramatic world of men’s tennis, do not be surprised if Rune and Agassi are spotted on the same side of the net again soon.
