'I have a shot at all four Grand Slams': Frances Tiafoe declares confident push for major glory

Frances Tiafoe still believes in his chances of winning a Grand Slam title after several deep runs in his career. The 27-year-old American trusts his ability to threaten the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the Grand Slams, while maintaining a strong world No. 12 ranking, close to the top 10.

"Big Foe" is beginning the American hardcourt swing, one of the most important periods of the year for him, given the significant number of points he has to defend. In 2024, he reached the final at the Cincinnati Open and the semifinals at the US Open, narrowly missing his first Grand Slam final. This period accounts for a significant portion of his ATP ranking points, keeping him in the top 12, despite being only No. 29 in the ATP Race (which exclusively measures 2025 points).

The American will play his first hardcourt tournament at the DC Open, one of the events where he feels most comfortable. Tiafoe was born in Hyattsville, Maryland, a small city in the suburbs of Washington D.C. "I love this area wholeheartedly, man," said Tiafoe. "It's shaped me into the person I am today. To be able to see what a tournament has been, to now be the face of the event, you know, it's incredible."

The former top-10 player hopes to leverage the home-court advantage and crowd support at a tournament where he's a fan favorite. "It's also amazing, you know, helping, seeing more people of color want to watch the game, play the game, be around it, being more knowledgeable about it. We had a few guys before doing amazing things, Arthur Ashe, and kind of want to keep that going, just keep that thing going."

Consistent performer Tiafoe confident in Grand Slam breakthrough

Tiafoe has remained consistent since his initial breakthrough on Tour. In 2018—at just 20 years old—he won his first title at the Delray Beach Open, and shortly after reached the final at the Estoril Open. To date, he has reached 10 finals (including one Masters 1000 final), though he has 'only' claimed titles on three occasions, all at the ATP 250 level.

Nevertheless, Tiafoe is a respected name on Tour, with several strong performances at Grand Slams, including two semifinal appearances (both at the US Open) and three other quarterfinal runs. The American has gained confidence in the biggest tournaments and trusts his chances of going even further.

"I feel like now I have a shot at all four majors, and so, that did change my mindset," he tells me. "It made me realize that it doesn't matter what you have or haven't done before. I think if you're ready to go and are in the right mental space, if you're happy and have the right amount of passion, you can kind of do anything."

Tiafoe is known for his friendly demeanor on Tour and always cracking jokes. For this reason, he's a public favorite, especially in the United States, where both his personality and his game captivate audiences. "I think people see a lot of genuine attributes in me, and hence, I get a lot of fan love and…I was about to say s--- like that," he added with a laugh. "I mean, things like that!"

"It's a lot of love for a guy like me, man, who came from such humble beginnings," he said to Tennis.com. "To have people so excited to see me. I'm very aware of where my feet are, man, and you treat others how you want to be treated."

The world No. 12 will debut at the DC Open this Thursday in the first round, where he will face fellow American Aleksandar Kovacevic, 26. Kovacevic has shown remarkable progress this year, reaching two ATP finals—the most recent last weekend, losing in straight sets to Denis Shapovalov. He currently holds a career-high ranking of No. 66 and is guaranteed to advance further up the rankings by the end of the week.
