'I want to show KD what I can do' - Venus Williams excited to have NBA star Kevin Durant watch her doubles match at DC Open

After spending over a year on the sidelines, WTA icon Venus Williams returned to action at the 2025 DC Open. The American tennis star entered both the singles and doubles draw, where she teamed up with compatriot Hailey Baptiste.

Williams had been absent from professional tennis since 2023, citing recovery from injuries. There was no word regarding her comeback, with fans speculating on whether she had quietly retired or if the announcement was coming soon.

The former World No.1 was even granted a wild card entry to Indian Wells this year, but she turned it down. However, Williams announced she would be returning to the WTA Tour at the start of the North American summer series, and confirmed her participation at the DC Open in Washington.

With plans to perhaps compete at the US Open this summer, Williams has opted to gain as much court time as she can handle. The 45-year old is playing in both singles and doubles at the DC Open, and teamed with rising American star Baptiste to take on the doubles pairing of American Clervie Ngounoue and former Wimbledon runner-up Genie Bouchard.

A special guest showed up to support Williams

With a packed crowd present, the team of Williams and Baptiste prevailed in a 6-3 6-1 first round victory. However, the duo noticed a unique spectator among the audience, NBA superstar and DC native Kevin Durant.

Following their victory, Williams and Baptiste revealed their anxiety at having the basketball legend watching and cheering them on.

"Yeah, we were both so focused and after the match I was like 'did you see Kevin Durant walk in," said Williams.

Baptiste responded by saying she heard the crowd chanting Durant's name, but tried to remain focused on keeping the ball in play.

"And that's when I think you actually started playing better," joked Williams. "I was like 'I want to show KD what I con do, hit the ball to me' but they hit every ball to you. However we win is fine."
