'I wanted to throw myself inside the fire,' Jannik Sinner recounts decision to overhaul coaching team and the 2022 season that brought Darren Cahill

Jannik Sinner has become the biggest youngest sensation in tennis this year. Winning his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open, the Italian cemented his spot as one of the best prodigies his country has ever produced. In a recent interview, he opened up about how he overhauled his coaching staff in 2022, which has helped him grab the ongoing red-hot form.

For context, by 2018 Sinner was playing in the Junior events while still at Piatti Tennis Academy. The following year, he decided to turn pro with Riccardo Piatti as his coach. His first ATP title came in Bergamo. Nine months later, he won the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals in style.

By 2022, still struggling to make his mark in the ATP, Sinner overhauled his coaching team, parting ways with Piatti. He collaborated with Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi with hopes of changing his game, and a few months later he broke into the Top 10.

I wanted to throw myself into the fire. I wanted to try a different method. Jannik Sinner said to Vogue on his decision to revamp his team

Simone Vagnozzi reveals what changes Jannik Sinner’s team worked upon

In the same interview, Sinner gave a brief insight into his rise in the world of tennis. His team also gave their takes on what goes behind making the World No. 2 an efficient machine on the court. Vagnozzi told Vogue that Sinner had an unusually formidable groundstroke but had to work on it to make it better, especially his serves.

He was always a really good fighter on the court. He never loses belief. Really strong with his forehand and backhand, but it was not various. It was monotone. Drop shots, coming to the net more, working on his serve, and especially to understand the game tactically, no?

Simone Vagnozzi said

A few months after partnering with Cahill and Vagnozzi, Sinner hired a new fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara. Ferrara’s first assignment was to grow Sinner’s body mass, which will help his backhand play. With all these different collaborations, Sinner has become a great player on the court, giving him the needed focus off the court.
