Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas was forced to retire mid-match during his opening round encounter at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, leading him to speculate on what the future holds as he deals with yet another injury.
The 24th seed faced off against Valentin Royer in the first round, with the Frenchman racing to a 6-3 6-2 lead. It was at this point that Tsitsipas threw in the towel, citing a back injury and gifting Royer a ticket to the second round.
The 26-year old has been going through a slump over the last year, as a dip in form has seen his ranking fall to World No.26. Tsitsipas' downfall has been compounded by injuries, which have limited his ability to perform at his peak performance.
Although the Athens native recently added former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic to his coaching team, he is yet to see positive results. Furthermore, Tsitsipas admitted in his post-match conference that his constant health issues could force him to take an extended break in the near future.
"This is probably the most difficult situation I've ever been in because it's a persistent problem that doesn't seem to be going away or getting better anytime soon," admitted Tsitsipas. "Personally, I have my limits at some point, so I'll definitely have to make a final decision about whether I want to do certain things or not in the next couple of months. It's going to be tough, but if it continues like this, there's no point in playing. If I'm not healthy, if my health isn't there, then my whole tennis life becomes miserable.”
