Iga Swiatek began her 2026 campaign with a victory by defeating Eva Lys of Germany at the United Cup.

Swiatek recovered from losing the first set against Lys to pick up another point for Poland after Hubert Hurkacz defeated Alexander Zverev in the opening tie.

The world number two will be hoping to go one further for Poland at the United Cup this year, after reaching the final in 2025.

With her opening victory in the 2026 season, Swiatek continued a perfect record to start the year with a bang.

Iga Swiatek has never lost her first match of the season

Swiatek’s match with Lys kickstarted her ninth season on the WTA Tour, and she has a 100% record in her opening games.

The Polish star has won all nine of her opening games of the season across six different tournaments, including the United Cup, Billie Jean King Cup, and the ASB Classic.

Year Opponent Tournament Result
2018 Petia Arshinkova Billie Jean King Cup W
2019 Elys Ventura ASB Classic W
2020 Timea Babos Australian Open W
2021 Kaja Juvan Melbourne W
2022 Daria Saville Adelaide International W
2023 Yulia Putintseva United Cup W
2024 Beatriz Haddad Maia United Cup W
2025 Malene Helgø United Cup W
2026 Eva Lys United Cup W

Swiatek has been dominant for Poland at the United Cup since its inception in 2023, beating Yulia Putintseva, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Malene Helgo, and now Lys in her opening game.

The star also previously represented Poland in the Billie Jean King Cup at the turn of the year in 2018, which she also won.

Considering Swiatek has won just one tournament in Australia in her entire career, at the 2021 Adelaide International, that’s a remarkable start for the Pole.

When will Iga Swiatek be next in action?

Victories for Hurkacz and Swiatek against Germany have put Poland in a very good position to qualify for the knockout stages.

However, they will still need to defeat the Netherlands in their next tie to confirm their place in the knockouts for the fourth consecutive year.

The world number two will play Dutch star Suzan Lamens in her next match, which is set to take place on 7 January.

Lamens is ranked world number 95, so Swiatek will be the overwhelming favourite to win her point for Poland.

Hurkacz, meanwhile, will face a potential banana skin in the form of Tallon Griekspoor in his singles clash.
