On her off day after her first-round Wimbledon match, Iga Swiatek spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about how she chills out during a tournament. The interview went viral because of the headset she wore, which was complete with bulky headphones and a massive fluffy microphone.

The five-time Grand Slam champion spoke about how crosswords help her unwind during matches. The Pole had also mentioned earlier about solving crosswords when she was asked about what helped focus her mind during a rain delay at the Bad Homburg Open quarterfinals. Swiatek also spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about her love for the American mystery comedy-drama television series ‘Desperate Housewives’, which aired from 2008 to 2012.

I do crosswords before the match. It’s more like to keep myself busy and not, I don’t know, go on social media or on the internet, you know. But I have a great TV show to watch. I’m watching Desperate Housewives. So I really enjoy that. I don’t know why I didn’t know this show before, but it’s just perfect, you know. Everything is great about it…

Outside of solving crosswords, Swiatek’s other nerdy interests include reading books, something about which she shares on her social media too. The 24-year-old also spoke about her love for nature and the outdoors but avoided doing it in the early days of the tournament, as she did not want to get sunburned. This year marked the hottest opening day at Wimbledon, with temperatures soaring to 90°F/32°C breaking the previous record of 84°F/29°C from 2001. She added:

Reading a book and for sure going to, you know, some nature. But I’ve got to say that the last few days I just stayed in because it was so hot that I just didn’t want to get sunburned.

Swiatek has had a good grass swing so far. After going a year without reaching a tour final, she finally reached a championship match at the Bad Homburg Open. The Pole made her comeback on the surface she was least expected to, as she had not reached any grass-court final prior to last week. Her recent performance will be a huge confidence boost for improving upon her previous best run at Wimbledon, which was in 2023, when she reached the quarterfinals.

Iga Swiatek will meet Danielle Collins in the third round

Iga Swiatek cruised past Russia’s Polina Kudermetova in the first round with a 7-5, 6-1 win. Swiatek faced a sterner challenge in her second round as she squandered a 4-1 lead, dropping the first set to her opponent Caty McNally. She regained her form in the subsequent sets to seal the victory with a scoreline of 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Swiatek will face Danielle Collins in the third round of Wimbledon. She has a 7-2 head-to-head record against the American, although Collins beat her in their last meeting in Rome a few months back. The third round will mark their first meeting on grass. Collins defeated Veronika Erjavec and Camila Osorio in her prior rounds at the SW19.

By reaching the third round at Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek is among the five top-ten seeded players who have made it to this round. With second seed Coco Gauff and third seed Jessica Pegula losing in the opening round of Wimbledon, this marks the first time in the Open Era that two of the top three seeds lost in the first round of a Grand Slam event.

Following Qinwen Zheng‘s opening round exit and 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini‘s exit in the second round, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is the only top-five seeded player left in the women’s draw. This marks the second time in the Open Era, after Wimbledon 2018, that just one of the top-five seeded players has made it to the third round in a Women’s Singles Grand Slam.
