Iga Swiatek handles Maya Joint challenge with ease to reach Korea Open final

After the rain crashed the party the day prior, Iga Swiatek has moved through to the final after winning two matches in a day at the Korea Open with ease.

She opened up against Barbora Krejcikova in what was expected to be a competitive Quarter-Final. Instead Swiatek ended up dominating, she swept the Czech ace in the opening set 6-0. After trading breaks early in the second, she broke for a 4-3 lead and then closed out the match 6-3 in just over an hour.

Swiatek though returned after a brief break to face Maya Joint in their first career meeting. Joint had upset No.3 seed Clara Tauson in the Quarter-Finals earlier in the day by the score of 6-0, 6-3.

But the 19-year-old who was again expected to perhaps pose trouble for Swiatek did anything but. With the quick turnaround, it only served to help Swiatek out as she won 6-0, 6-2 in just over an hour to secure her spot in the final. She broke to love in the opening game and needed just 25 minutes to bagel Joint in the first set.

Joint held serve to start the second set to finally get on the board. But Swiatek reeled off four straight games to go up a set and a double break. Joint broke later in the set but Swiatek won the final two games, she closed out the match with a superb smash at the net.

Swiatek now faces Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final who dealt with Katerina Siniakova as well as Ella Seidel. She won the latter 6-2, 6-3 after which she defeated the Czech ace 6-4, 6-2. Earlier in the day Siniakova had seen off Suzan Lamens 6-1, 7-5.

Swiatek didn't know at the time who she was going to play but was ready for whatever task she was set to face. “Let’s see who I play,” Swiatek said after the match. “But I’ll just focus on myself and on the goals that I had before and continue to do what I was doing throughout the tournament, because it's been working.

“The final is supposed to be the toughest and it always produces a different kind of stress, so I’m just happy that I’ve already played solid matches here.”
