Iga Swiatek continued her perfect Wimbledon form at the Canadian Open as she defeated Eva Lys in straight sets to reach the fourth round. The former World No.1 remains one of the best players in the women’s circuit and proved that at the All England Club last month, ending her twelve-month title drought.
By doing so, the Polish star became the first player in more than 100 years to win the Wimbledon singles final without dropping a game as she triumphed over Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0. The Grand Slam triumph came after the 24-year-old had gone through a very rough patch in her career.
During her struggle on the court, she was harshly criticized by her country’s media. In fact, after crashing out of the French Open semi-finals in June, a Polish outlet reported that she was suggesting taking a long break from the tour, which will see her miss the Wimbledon Championships. But Swiatek later came forward to say that the report was false.
Now, things are beginning to fall in the right places for Swiatek on tour. She recorded her ninth consecutive win on tour at the Canadian Open in Montreal, after beating Eva Lys 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Canadian Open fourth round. The Polish star is now one of the favorites to win the tournament after defending champion Jessica Pegula crashed out in the third round.
In her press conference after her third-round win, she was asked whether she reads stories about her published in Polish outlets during her spare time on tour. She blatantly revealed that she doesn’t read them except for the time she was two months off from tournaments last year:
Overall I don’t read. I only did (read) when I had, like, two months off from tournaments just because I was kind of bored, and there was a lot of weird things that totally didn’t make sense. So I wanted to actually see that, because it was so ridiculous that I didn’t believe people around me saying that (that’s) what (the) media wrote. I wanted to have that proof. But besides that, I don’t read at all. Doesn’t make sense.
The period Swiatek was away from the court was during the time she took a break from the tour and also served her one-month suspension for testing positive for trimetazidine in August. Since then, the World No.3 has been consistently playing on the court and holds a 42-11 win-loss record this season.
Iga Swiatek has won 12 of her last 13 matches on tour, which has seen her rediscover her form. She gave a masterclass performance against Eva Lys in the third round, dropping just four games throughout the match. The win will now see the World No.3 face Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the fourth round.
During her on-court interview, she revealed that she had fun playing against Lys in the third round. Swiatek added that she focused on her plan for the match on the court despite it not being an easy game:
It’s always fun here. It was a solid match so I’m happy to have a chance to play another one here. The match was different from how we played each other last time. I just focused on myself and knew what my plan was, but Eva played some great down-the-line shots and sometimes was really able to use her wrist and play some fast balls. It wasn’t easy, but I’m happy I just did my job.
Swiatek will now face Tauson for the third time in her career. The Polish star has won their previous two encounters. Their last meeting came at the Wimbledon Championships in July with Swiatek winning the Dane 6-4, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament.
