Iga Swiatek Makes Concerning Statements After Danielle Collins Loss in Rome
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Four hours after her surprising defeat to Danielle Collins at the Italian Open in Rome, Iga Swiatek finally faced the press. It is unusual for any player to take that long after a match to give a statement. Swiatek kept it brief and made some concerning and blunt statements heading into Roland Garros.

“I think I was not there, not on the court to fight, to struggle,” said Swiatek during the press conference. “I focused on my mistakes, that's my mistake. I'm not doing things right. I'm focusing on the wrong things,” added Swiatek.

Swiatek also mentioned that she has already spoken with her team and will look to work with them to implement some key changes to her mindset in the coming few weeks.

"I need to find myself and change some things- I have sought some advice from the team, we came to certain conclusions, so I'm just going to try to change my state of mind over the next few weeks," said Swiatek. “It would be stupid to wait too long at Roland Garros, because I'm not capable of playing my game right now."

It is strange to see a five-time grand slam champion struggle, not with her game or injuries or health but with her mentality on the court- additionally on her favorite surface. These statements some as a concern for her fans who have already been on the edge in 2025. Telling losses and a title-less year, do not bode well for Swiatek as she heads into the final test of the clay season.

Swiatek will fall out of the top three rankings for the first time since March 2022. This shaky exit of the champion, will open doors for other contenders who have been doing exceptionally well this year such as Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. With Naomi Osaka also making her quite progress under the radar, the 2025 French Open promises to be an exciting affair.
