The 2025 Cincinnati Open came to a conclusion on Monday, August 18 as Polish star Iga Swiatek defeated Italian ace Jasmine Paolini to win her maiden title at the WTA 1000 event.
After losing in the fourth round at the Canadian Open, Swiatek looked unstoppable during her run in Cincinnati. The former World No.1 did not drop a set en route to the final, where she faced an always dangerous Paolini for one of the biggest titles before the US Open.
It was the lower-ranked Paolini who raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, shocking fans with her aggressive play from the baseline. Swiatek appeared overwhelmed by the onslaught from Paolini, as the Polish star was unable to match her Italian Opponent's consistency.
However, the six-time Grand Slam champion soon found her rhythm, as she would rally off five consecutive games to lead 5-3. Paolini would hold to force Swiatek to serve out the set at 5-4, which the Polish star surprisingly failed to do.
With the score tied at 5-5, Paolini would attempt to capitalize on her newfound momentum. However, Swiatek's anticipation and experience proved to be crucial, as the third seed broke back to lead 6-5, before successfully serving out the set in just under an hour.
The second set saw Swiatek both ladies trade breaks to remain level at 3-3. However, a few errant shots by Paolini would hand Swiatek the crucial break. This time the Polish star would not hesitate, closing out the match with an ace in one hour and 49 minutes.
Swiatek's form has been impressive during her run in Cincinnati. The 24-year old leaves the city with her second title of the season. Furthermore, Swiatek has leapfrogged American Coco Gauff in the WTA Rankings, as she now sits at the World No.2 position.
By virtue of her victory, Swiatek will be the second seed at the upcoming US Open. This ensures she will avoid any potential matchups with World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka until the final. The US Open singles main draw kicks off on Sunday, August 24.
