'I’m still shaking,' Jessica Pegula faces a crushing loss against unseeded WTA player Clara Burel who still can’t lean into the surreal feeling of victory

Rising French tennis star Clara Burel shocked fifth seed Jessica Pegula on Thursday as the 22-year-old ousted the 2023 WTA Finals finalist in straight sets at the Margaret Court Arena. Burel beat Pegula 6-4 6-2 in one hour and 10 minutes to end the 29-year-old American’s hopes of landing her maiden Grand Slam title.

The former Australian Open 2018 girls’ finalist Burel looked flawless against Pegula who saw her impressive record in Melbourne getting tainted. As the American had progressed to the quarterfinals in the past three years, Pegula was expected to sail through against unseeded Burel. However, an anticlimax was witnessed by the fans on Thursday.

Jessica Pegula could not survive against the Frenchwoman who fought hard to take the first set 6-4. In the second set, Burel further upped her intensity while Pegula dropped her shoulders. This meant the 22-year-old Frenchwoman rushed to a 6-2 win. After the match, Burel could not believe that she won so quickly.

I think I’m not realizing it right now. I’m still shaking. I still saw that match point, that last shot. But I’m so happy. It was a good match. I’m just really happy to be through.. I just tried to stay in the moment. Clara Burel said after the win over Jessica Pegula.

Win over Jessica Pegula best of Clara Burel’s career

Clara Burel was thrilled to have defeated a Top 10 player as she called her win over Jessica Pegula the best of her career. Although Burel had defeated Elena Rybakina in the past (at the 2022 US Open when the Kazakh ace was World No.25) and Karolina Pliskova, she rates the win against Pegula higher than any other.

I didn't play much [against the] Top 10, so it's definitely my best win of my career. Clara Burel said. (H/T: WTA)

The 22-year-old Frenchwoman is also happy about the fact that three Frenchwomen have qualified for the third round at a Grand Slam event.

I just saw that we [have] three [French women] in the third round," Burel said. "It didn't happen since a few years. So yeah, it's really nice to see everyone playing well. The Frenchwoman said.

Notably, Clara Burel takes on compatriot Oceane Dodin, who reached the first Grand Slam third round of her career by defeating Martina Trevisan 6-4, 6-4. It will be the first meeting between Burel and Dodin.
