The 2025 Canadian Open has been hit by the injury bug, as several top stars have announced their withdrawal from the ATP Masters 1000 event. Joining several players on the sideline is Matteo Berrettini, who has dealt with injury lay-offs for most of the 2025 ATP season.

With the Canadian Open being one of the most popular events on the road to the US Open, tennis fans were hoping to see some of their favorite tars in action. However, fans will have to do without the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, who have all announced their withdrawal due to fatigue or minor injuries.

Berrettini himself has been dealing with injuries all season. The Italian picked up an ailment at the Rome Maters earlier this year, which caused him to miss a month and a half of action on tour.

The former World No.6 would return at Wimbledon, an event where he finished runner-up a few years ago. However, Berrettini would be unable to replicate his previous success, as he lost in the opening round to Polish player Kamil Majchrzak in an exhausting five-set thriller.

Berrettini to be replaced by Japanese star

The Italian announced on Wednesday that he would not be able to compete at the Canadian Open. With the Italian set for another spell on the sidelines, Japanese star Yoshihito Nishioka will replace him as an alternate.

The Tsu native has been subpar this season, losing in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships to Grigor Dimitrov. Coincidentally, the Bulgarian will not be competing at the Canadian Open, after tearing his pectoral muscle in his round of 16 bout against World No.1 Jannik Sinner at SW19.

Although Dimitrov was leading two sets to love, he suffered the injury in the third set, forcing him to withdraw. Subsequently, Sinner would go on to win the title, defeating two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final to win his first Wimbledon trophy.
