'It is quite the opposite,' Rafael Nadal wins over a sportsman’s admiration as Spanish former ATP player gushes about his comeback

Rafael Nadal made his comeback on Tuesday with a smashing win. After being out of the court for almost a year, Rafa made his comeback in the Round of 32 match of the Brisbane International. He was up against the 2020 US Open winner Dominic Thiem. The Austrian was dismantled by the Spaniard as Rafa beat him in straight sets to clinch the win after a much-awaited comeback.

Fellow countryman and former tennis player, Alex Corretja has always urged about Rafa’s comeback. Before the tournament, Corretja also suggested the 37-year-old not to focus on results. Rather, just enjoy the game at this point in his career.

Corretja also had his opinions regarding Rafa’s victory at the Brisbane International. Through the YouTube channel El Larguero Corretja said,

His return seemed incomprehensible to me in a good way. With so much time off what you do is lose distances, rhythms and it is quite the opposite.

There were a lot of doubts regarding Rafa’s fitness and momentum upon his comeback. However, with the match, it is pretty clear with Rafa’s movements that he is pretty much up and running for the tournaments. Moreover, the tennis sessions with Arthur Fils in Dubai have been pretty helpful.

What’s ahead in 2024 for Rafael Nadal?

The Brisbane International is going to be a good training ground for Rafa upon his comeback. His major sight will be upon the Australian Open set to start in the latter part of this month.

That is when he is going to face tougher resilience and competition, including that of defending champion Novak Djokovic. The 37-year-old has things pretty much clear that this is probably going to be his last time playing professional tennis in Australia. Thus, he will be looking to make it a memorable one.

The win against Thiem in the first match is a comeback is more of a statement from Rafa’s side. He will be up against the world-ranked No.97 Jason Kubler in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
