Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has shared his thoughts after witnessing Carlos Alcaraz’s thrilling victory at the 2025 French Open.
The dramatic final saw Alcaraz overcome Jannik Sinner in a gripping five-set battle, winning 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) after saving three match points.
Nadal, often dubbed the ‘King of Clay’ for his unparalleled success on the red dirt courts of Paris, claimed 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros. This year marked the first French Open since his retirement last year, a tournament where Nadal’s legacy looms large. Yet, contrary to what some might have expected, the 37-year-old Spanish icon revealed that watching from the sidelines did not evoke any longing to return to the court.
"I don’t feel like I would have liked to be there," Nadal said candidly during a charity golf event in Spain. "I watched the tournament like any other fan, excited to see a place that was so important during my career and simply enjoying the tennis. This is my new reality, I don’t look beyond that.".
Despite his retirement, Nadal admitted to being deeply engrossed as he witnessed Alcaraz battle back from a seemingly insurmountable two-set deficit. The youthful Spaniard’s comeback showcased not only his physical stamina but also a maturity beyond his years, qualities Nadal knows well from his own career.
"It was a match for the ages,” Nadal reflected. “I’m very happy for Carlos. It was a spectacular final, very exciting. Ending up with the cup after Sinner was so close to taking it for so long, I’m very happy for him.".
This victory gave Alcaraz his fifth Grand Slam title, firmly establishing him as the heir apparent to Nadal’s legacy on clay and beyond. Their combined tally of 16 French Open titles highlights the ongoing dominance of Spanish tennis at Roland Garros, a legacy passed from one generation to the next.
Nadal also praised both Alcaraz and Sinner, acknowledging their current supremacy in men’s tennis. "There will be Grand Slam champions every year, and each of them will tread their own path. New stars will always appear, and here we have two of them," Nadal said. "They are two players who are head and shoulders above the rest at the moment.".
For Nadal, this tournament was more than just watching a new champion crowned, it was a moment to reflect on his own extraordinary journey and to witness the sport he loves evolve.
