Caroline Garcia will retire from tennis in the coming months in sudden news on Friday morning after the former WTA Finals champion failed to recapture the form that saw her win the Year End Finals in 2022.
Garcia has a career high ranking of World No.4 and is one of a handful of players to combine both singles and doubles achieving a high of World No.2 also in the latter and is a two-time major champion in women's doubles.
Starting off mainly as a doubles star, she emerged in singles winning three WTA 1000 level titles including Wuhan and China in 2017 but then return to the fore in 2022 winning Cincinnati and in both 2018 and 2022, she became World No.4.
The latter came alongside a US Open semi-final and was after she'd dropped out of the top 70 in 2021. She started working with Bertrand Perret which was a masterstroke as she went through a career best run.
But unfortunately for Garcia, she had middling results after that and ended her season with anxiety and panic attacks at the end of 2024. She sits alongside a cusp of players about to fall out of the top 100 including Maria Sakkari, Marketa Vondrousova and Victoria Azarenka. Most of whom had success also at the same time as Garcia showing a changing of the WTA Guard.
Now she has decided after not playing a lot in recent months to retire. She joins Garbine Muguruza who also retired after winning the WTA Finals and will play her final Roland Garros starting against Bernarda Pera.
Presumably she stays in tennis also in some form. She presents Tennis Insider Club alongside fiance Borja Duran interviewing top tennis stars. But for now at least, she is saying goodbye on court at 31.
"Dear tennis, It’s time to say goodbye," she penned on X.
"After 15 years competing at the highest level, and more than 25 years putting pretty much every second of my life into it, I feel ready to start a new chapter. My tennis journey hasn’t always been easy. Since my early days, tennis has been much more than just winning or losing. It’s been love or hate. Happiness or anger.
"Still, I’m deeply grateful for this journey—for everything tennis has given me, and for how much it’s helped me become a strong, passionate, hard-working woman.
"But now, it’s time for something else. My body and my personal goals need it. Still, this is not over—not just yet. I have a few tournaments left.
"The first one is at home, at Roland Garros. My 14th consecutive time being part of it. And my last. So to all my tennis family who’ll be around: let’s meet one more time, to dream, and fight together.
"In the coming days, there will be more time to share what’s next for me. But for now, I just want to focus on living these last weeks as a tennis pro to the fullest. Thank you so much for your support. See you soon on court."
