World #7 Jack Draper will miss the rest of the 2025 season due to an ongoing arm injury. The 23-year-old enjoyed a brilliant first half of the season and was in a good position to reach the ATP Finals for the first time, but has hardly played since his early exit at Wimbledon.
Draper reached the round of 16 at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, while also winning his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells. Impressively, he enjoyed success on all three surfaces, reaching another Masters 1000 final on the clay of Madrid, before losing in three sets to Casper Ruud and reaching the last four at Queen’s.
With the arrival of the grass season, expectation was rife, as British fans put their faith in the in-form Draper. Much to their disappointment, the Briton suffered a shock second-round SW19 exit at the hands of 2014 US Open champion and former Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic. It was a tough draw, but still a disappointing defeat for Draper, who has yet to reach the third round at Wimbledon.
Draper then entered US Open without having played any warmup tournaments due to injury, and it is now apparent that the injury continued to trouble him in New York. Despite winning his first round match against Federico Agustin Gomez in four sets, it was clear he was being held back – his forehand wasn’t as explosive as usual and his serve was significantly notably down on the pace.
Perhaps he rushed back to play the final Slam of the year in the hope that the injury wasn’t as serious as it turned out to be, especially as he was defending semifinal points from the previous year. Unfortunately for Draper, suffering from injuries is not a new problem.
This arm injury means Draper will end the 2025 season having played only two matches in the final five months of the year, and at almost 24-years-old, we have still only seen one full, injury-free season from him. In that season, we saw just how good he can be – and he proved he has the tools to challenge the elite and carry on Andy Murray’s legacy. But, injuries continue to set him back.
When he first turned pro in 2018, he suffered a lot physically. Often struggling to keep up with the demands of the Tour, unable to see out matches without being running into injury trouble or other physical issues. Though he has made impressive progress, he also clearly has not put those problems behind him. Indeed, even during his semifinal clash against Jannik Sinner at last year’s US Open – in theory one of his finest hours – he was throwing up on court. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he lost in straight sets.
While there is no doubt that Draper is a supremely talented tennis player, if he is to ever win a Grand Slam title, he will have to find a way to overcome these fairly unfortunate yet consistent injury troubles.
