Jannik Sinner offers insight on fitness concerns following Vienna Open final scare

Despite clinching the title, Jannik Sinner did not look quite right during the Vienna Open final.

Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev to claim his second Vienna Open crown, adding a 22nd career trophy to his collection.

It was also his first tournament since the Shanghai Masters, where he had to retire against Tallon Griekspoor due to cramping issues.

The same issue appeared again in the final with Zverev, and Sinner has now shared how he is feeling following his latest win in Austria.

Sinner defeated Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, though he seemed to be battling cramps, especially early in the match.

The Italian star attributed the pressure of playing in a final as a possible contributing factor, but as quoted by Ubitennis, he downplayed any significant concerns, while speaking in his post-match press conference.

Sinner also mentioned that his experience at the Shanghai Masters helped him manage the situation better this time around.

“I think you always feel a little more pressure in a final. I had some cramps, very, very small. What happened in Shanghai definitely taught me something. This time it wasn’t as intense; otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible.”

He added: “I served pretty well, and that gave me the energy to play good tennis again on return games. Physically, I feel good. I moved well at the end, too. So everything’s fine. I’m a little tired, as was Sascha at the end. That’s normal. It’s been a very intense and long week. I’m very, very happy.”

Cramping was not his only challenge during the tournament, either. Sinner also had to deal with criticism over his decision not to play for Italy in the Davis Cup.

Jannik Sinner’s Paris Masters bid and what stands in his way

Sinner gave a positive fitness update, so there does not seem to be much reason for him to pull out of the Paris Masters like Novak Djokovic has done.

Despite being on a 21-match winning streak on indoor hard courts, the Italian has historically found the Paris Masters to be particularly challenging.

He has yet to go beyond the third round in three previous trips, and he will be hoping for a deeper run this time around.

Paris Masters 2025 Jannik Sinner’s Potential Draw
First Round Receives a bye as the second seed
Second Round Alex Michelsen/Zizou Bergs
Third Round Francisco Cerundolo (17)/Miomir Kecmanovic/Aleksandar Kovacevic/Damir Dzumhur
Quarterfinals Ben Shelton (5)/Andrey Rublev (12)/Tomas Machac/Learner Tien
Semifinals Alexander Zverev (3)/Lorenzo Musetti (7)/Daniil Medvedev (11)/Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (15)
Final Carlos Alcaraz (1)/Taylor Fritz (4)/Alex de Minaur (6)/Casper Ruud (8)

Sinner enters as the second seed and will start his campaign against either Alex Michelsen or Zizou Bergs after receiving a first-round bye.

Notable names in his half include Zverev, Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Musetti, and Daniil Medvedev. Navigating that group will not be straightforward.

Should Sinner advance through those potential obstacles, he could set up another final meeting with Carlos Alcaraz.
