Jannik Sinner is through to his third consecutive Australian Open semi-final after taking down Ben Shelton in straight sets on Wednesday.
Sinner looked steady throughout the match, claiming a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory in just under two and a half hours.
Earlier in the tournament, Sinner battled severe cramps due to extreme heat. But since then, he hasn’t dropped a set across his last two matches and appears to have found his rhythm again.
He now faces Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Djokovic, who has won ten titles in Melbourne, advanced after Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire early due to injury.
After seeing off Shelton, Sinner shared his thoughts on Musetti’s situation and looked ahead to facing Djokovic.
Lorenzo Musetti was in a strong position against Novak Djokovic, leading 6-4, 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena before the match took a turn. Midway through the third set, Musetti picked up a right leg injury and ended up retiring at 1-3, giving Djokovic a spot in the semi-finals.
Speaking after his own win over Shelton, Sinner spoke about his compatriot’s situation and looked ahead to what is shaping up as another huge contest with Djokovic.
“Unfortunate for Lorenzo,” he said. “In the other way, it’s very difficult to play against Novak, especially best of five. It’s still long.”
“So, you know, I hope it’s nothing too tough for Lorenzo because starting the season with an injury is also not easy.”
“At the same time, it’s going to be very tough match the next one. We know each other quite well so it’s going to be interesting to see how we handle the situation and then we see but I haven’t seen a lot.”
Sinner has won their last five meetings across all competitions.
The Italian has already defeated Djokovic in two Grand Slam semi-finals in 2025 and will have the chance to do it again when they meet under lights on Friday night.
According to OptaAce, Musetti is the first player in the Open Era to retire from a Grand Slam quarter-final or beyond after taking the opening two sets.
Musetti told reporters he had picked up a right leg injury during his loss to Djokovic. It remains unclear how long he will be out of action or if it will impact his season significantly.
Sinner, meanwhile, has now won 12 straight matches against top-10 players, dating back to his victory over Alex de Minaur at the 2025 China Open. He’ll look to extend that run to 13 when he takes on Djokovic on Friday.
