Jannik Sinner has praised wheelchair tennis players for their desire to compete in the sport despite their frailties. The Italian star has been a big supporter of wheelchair tennis and has once played with them on the court. His statement comes just as the 2025 US Open Wheelchair Championships is set to begin on September 2.
Sinner tried wheelchair tennis before the start of the 2024 Miami Open. He played alongside former World No.1 in singles and doubles, Alfie Hewett, at the campus of the Hard Rock Stadium after receiving an invitation from the wheelchair player. He was taught how to move the chair properly on the court before partnering with the British star on the court.
Alfie Hewett will be back on the court at the US Open after missing the 2024 edition due as he was competing at the Paralympics in Paris. He claimed the men’s doubles gold medal at the Olympics alongside fellow British star Gordon Reid. Both players are set to compete together at the US Open Wheelchair Championships.
They are seeking for their sixth Grand Slam wheelchair men’s doubles title in New York, having gone unbeaten between 2017 and 2021. Hewitt and Reid made history at the 2023 US Open, competing as the first-ever all-British wheelchair singles final at a Grand Slam tournament, which Hewitt won in straight sets.
During Sinner’s post-match press conference, he stated that wheelchair tennis players are unbelievable on the court. The World No.1 added that they are amazing at what they do with their bodies on the court:
I’m a huge fan of wheelchairs. Amazing athletes. It’s unbelievable. How they are behind the scenes you cannot know, but they are super, super kind. It’s amazing what they can do with their bodies. I was lucky and honored to try wheelchair tennis for a small amount of time when I was with Hewett in Miami, and it was great. It shows how difficult it is for them and it is amazing what they could do with their body. For us, it is a norm, but for them it is not.
Sinner is into the quarter-finals of the US Open men’s singles after beating Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. The 24-year-old finally got his revenge against the Kazakhstan star after losing to him in the third round of the Terra Wortmann Open. Sinner is hoping to become the first man since Roger Federer (2004 to 2008) to defend the US Open.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are projected to meet at the US Open final, which will make it their third consecutive Grand Slam final. The duo is into the quarter-finals of the US Open and just have to win two matches to continue with their rivalry on the court. Alcaraz leads their head-to-head record 9-5 on tour and has won three of their last meetings.
During Sinner’s post-match press conference, he revealed that despite their rivalry, he and Alcaraz maintain a good relationship off the court. He added that they might be enemies when they face each other but always end it after their routine post-match handshake at the net:
I think that we have a good friendship also off the court. It’s something great to see. We see that this is possible, it’s not like you have to be enemies also off the court. Of course we are enemies when we step on the court, we try to play our best tennis. But it ends there. After the handshake, everything is fine again.
Sinner will take on fellow compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals of the US Open, while Alcaraz faces Jiri Lehecka . If both players win their matches, Sinner is projected to face either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Alex de Minaur, while Alcaraz will possibly play Novak Djokovic or 2024 runner-up Taylor Fritz.
