Jannik Sinner Silences Critics Ahead of the 2025 ATP Finals

World No.1 Jannik Sinner proclaimed that he was proud to be Italian amidst criticism of him not participating in the 2025 Davis Cup. The Italian has led his country to consecutive victories in the prestigious tournament over the last two years and has been the standout player, alongside Carlos Alcaraz, on the ATP Tour as well.

Over the last two years, Sinner has won four Grand Slams and came agonizingly close to adding another to his tally in Roland Garros this summer.

However, ever since he decided to skip the Davis Cup Finals this year, he has come under massive criticism for his commitment to national duties. The 24-year-old, who was born in South Tyrol, has come under the radar for prioritizing other events over leading his country to a historic three-peat.

During his pre-tournament press conference at the ATP Finals, Sinner was asked if he would have faced less criticism if he had been born closer to the mainland, to which he replied:

“I’m proud to be Italian, I’m very happy to be born in Italy and not in Austria or anywhere else. Because like I always said, and I say it with full honesty, this country deserves much more than what I’m doing: we have infrastructures, coaches, players, so many different mentalities which are also our strength.

"Some say Alto Adige is different, some say Sicily is totally different… but we are lucky for it, in my opinion. We have everything to compete with the best in the world, we need to stay united, to love each other and give each other strength to win more trophies and have more pride, because Italy deserves it.”

Sinner regained the World No.1 ranking after his triumph in Bercy last weekend, but will lose the spot to Alcaraz ahead of Turin. But could once again rise to the top if he wins the event and the Spaniard fails to register three victories.

Ex-American Player Sings Praise of Jannik Sinner Ahead of the 2025 ATP Finals

Former American tennis player John Isner believed that Jannik Sinner was unbeatable in the indoor conditions ahead of the 2025 ATP Finals.

Speaking on the Nothing Major podcast, the former Wimbledon semifinalist reflected on his experience of playing against the Italian in similar conditions in Davis Cup and said:

“The guy is just virtually unbeatable indoors. I played him in Davis Cup in Turin years ago. He beat me 2 and 0 indoors. When he is locked in, indoors, no conditions, no wind, no sun. He is good on anything, clearly. But when that ball is bouncing exactly where he knows it’s going to bounce indoors, it is goodnight nurse.”

The 23-time title winner lifted the trophy in Turin last year without losing a match and even reached the final of the event in the 2023 editions, but lost out to Novak Djokovic.
