American Jennifer Brady made it to the semifinal round of the 2020 U.S. Open and then reached the final of this year's Australian Open. However, the 26-year-old currently ranked No. 14 will make no such run in Flushing Meadows this time around.
According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Brady withdrew from the U.S. Open on the first day of the tournament's main draw because of an injury that forced her to retire from her second-round match against Jelena Ostapenko at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati earlier this month. Per ESPN, Brady was set to face 18-year-old Emma Raducanu in the first round of the U.S. Open.
Dzevad Mesic of Tennis World USA noted for a piece published Aug. 18 that Brady had been carrying the unspecified injury throughout the summer.
"Yeah, just something that just takes a long time. It's a bit of a nagging injury," she explained at that time. "It's something that you can't really like put a boot on or crutch around and it just goes away. It takes a lot of work. It's really sensitive.
"Yeah, it's not something that can just disappear on its own. Yeah, I've definitely been trying to do everything I possibly can. I mean, I'm feeling a lot better, so we'll see how it feels."
