Jessica Pegula completes impressive feat with Wuhan victory

Jessica Pegula remains a symbol of consistency in women's tennis.

The American star on Thursday clinched her spot in the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open, thereby becoming the only active player to reach the final eight of all 10 WTA 1000 events on the calendar.

Pegula had previously advanced to the quarterfinals or beyond in all of the other nine WTA 1000 events — Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Montreal, Cincinnati and Beijing. This includes two title wins in Montreal, multiple finals appearances in Miami, Madrid and Cincinnati and her recent semifinal loss in Beijing.

Jessica Pegula continues consistent run

She checked Wuhan off the list with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, setting up a quarterfinals clash against Katerina Siniakova. In the process, the 31-year-old became the oldest player to reach the quarterfinals at Beijing and Wuhan in the same season.

That's not all — Pegula is now the only active player to reach the QF or beyond at the 15 biggest tournaments on the WTA calendar, which includes the four majors and the WTA Finals. Pegula reached the semifinal of this year's U.S. Open, a year after losing to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a hard-fought final at Flushing Meadows.

Jessica Pegula inches closer to WTA Finals

Speaking of the WTA Finals, the World No. 6 Pegula is on the brink of qualifying for the year-ending event for a second consecutive season. Last year, she fell to fellow American Coco Gauff in the group stages.

Pegula, with 4,748 points, can qualify by either outright winning the Wuhan Open or if Elena Rybakina loses before the semifinals. The latter result won't matter if Pegula can win the tournament, as she's got a points edge over Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva and Jasmine Paolini — the other three women vying for the final spots.

Thus far, only Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, Gauff and Madison Keys have sealed their spots for Riyadh. The final three spots will be determined by this weekend.
