Joao Fonseca once again fell short against Jack Draper, this time at Roland Garros. The Brazilian was handed a straight-sets defeat in a match that echoed their previous clash at Indian Wells. Draper’s commanding performance left little room for Fonseca to find his rhythm.
Although his campaign in Paris ended sooner than hoped, Fonseca leaves with his head held high. Reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time marks an important step in his career. He also spoke openly about his goals for the rest of the season. Fonseca said in his Roland Garros post-match press conference:
A goal? I wanna play the big tournaments. I mean, now with my ranking I can play. But I wanna play like the main draw of the 500s, all of them. Maybe top 40 or something like that. The goal for me at the end of the year maybe is to be a seeded player in Australia. It’s my personal goal.
This experience will be valuable as Fonseca continues to develop. Each match at this level adds to his maturity and readiness for future challenges. His journey in Paris has given him renewed confidence and motivation.
João Fonseca says he wants to get his ranking high enough to play all the 500 events and be seeded in Australia next year, ‘He’s a great player. I know I didn’t play my best. Now we need to move on and think about the next weeks. Grass season is coming. It’s just the beginning’… pic.twitter.com/rUgWXAXAWe

With the grass-court season approaching, Fonseca will face new tests. But based on his performances in Melbourne and Paris, he has shown he can pose a serious challenge to seeded players in early rounds.
Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca continues to make headlines as he reaches another major milestone in his young career. The 18-year-old Brazilian has impressed at Roland Garros, where he advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. His performance is already drawing praise from top coaches who believe he is on the path to Grand Slam success.
Fonseca defeated Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets, 7-6(4), 7-6(4), 6-4. The win came in front of a home crowd cheering for Herbert, making the achievement even more notable. Fonseca showed composure and maturity beyond his years throughout the match.
At 18 years and 277 days old, Fonseca became the youngest player since 2000 to reach the third round in Paris with back-to-back straight-set victories. He surpassed Rafael Nadal’s mark, who was 18 years and 354 days old when he did the same in 2005 during his first title run at Roland Garros.
This breakthrough performance is set to boost Fonseca’s ATP ranking. He is projected to rise 11 spots, reaching a new career high of No. 53. His rapid rise is fueling expectations that he will soon be a serious contender at the sport’s biggest events.
Jack Draper delivered a dominant performance at the French Open, overwhelming Brazil’s Joao Fonseca in straight sets. The 23-year-old Brit wasted no time making his mark, dismissing the teenage talent with ease. Draper’s powerful showing sent a strong message to his rivals at the tournament.
Fonseca, considered one of the sport’s rising stars, struggled to match Draper’s pace and precision. Despite the hype around the 18-year-old, he was outplayed in every aspect of the match. Draper controlled the tempo, using smart drop shots and clean groundstrokes to dismantle his opponent.
From the very first game, Draper looked in full command. His focus never wavered, and he maintained control throughout the 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win. With this result, the British No. 1 moves into the next round, where he will face either Alexander Bublik or Henrique Rocha.
In a tournament full of tight contests, Draper’s win was especially convincing. His mix of strategy, power, and mental strength was on full display. As the event progresses, Draper is fast becoming a player to watch in the men’s draw.

Russia’s Mirra Andreeva has suffered a major blow ahead of the Cincinnati Open. The 18-year-old recently featured at the Canadian Open, where she was knocked out after losing in the round of 32 to McCartney Kessler in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4. In that contest, Andreeva suffered an ankle injury, which has now pushed her out of the upcoming Cincinnati Open. The WTA 1000 event is set to begin on Aug. 7, where some of the best players will participate to lift the title. It is not clear whether Andreeva will be able to gain full fitness for the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, the U.S. Open, which will start from Aug. 24. The recent development comes as a severe blow in Andreeva’s hopes of having a good preparation for the US Open, especially after having a decent time during the same competition last year where she cemented a spot in the quarterfinal, only to lost to six-time Grand Slam winner Poland’s Iga Swiatek with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. On her way to the last eight, Andreeva defeated fifth-seed and two-time Grand Slam runner-up Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16 with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Andreeva’s record at the US Open does not make for great reading as well, which means that even if she recovers in time, she will have a hard time improving her record while playing at the Flashing Meadows. It is the only Grand Slam where Andreeva has never got past the second round. Her best appearance came in the 2023 and 2024 editions, where on both occasions, she was knocked out after losing in the round of 64. Big setback That defeat ended Andreeva’s run of three consecutive quarterfinal appearances this season, in which she lost all three. At the French Open, Andreeva lost to France’s Lois Boisson in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-3. Then in Homburg, Andreeva came second-best in the last-eight contest to Linda Noskova in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Her most recent defeat in the quarterfinals came at Wimbledon, where Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic came out on top in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6. Even though the outing against Bencic did not go as planned, it was still Andreeva’s best performance while playing at Wimbledon. Talking after the defeat, Andreeva stated that she was keen to work on being more aggressive on the court and making fewer mistakes. “A little bit more focused, less mistakes and more aggressive,” she said in July while explaining her future goals. “Today is a hard day, but I can take a lot of positives from these two weeks, for sure. We’re going to move on and improve. The next practice I have, I’m going to try to focus on practicing on being aggressive, trying to step into the court when I play points, maybe play even more volleys, keep improving my serve and my returns. "There are plenty of things that Conchita has in mind. We are going to talk about it. We’re going to share our thoughts, and we’re going to go from there. When I’m on the court and something is not working and doesn’t go my way, I get frustrated because I want everything to be perfect. But we all know that perfection doesn’t exist, especially on the tennis court. I used to struggle a lot with this, not kind of forgiving myself for making a mistake or just putting the wrong shot in the court. Now I feel like it’s getting better. I feel like it can maybe bother me for, I don’t know, one, two points.”
Despite being viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe ended up sliding into the third round. The 22-year-old — who was the starter for Alabama for two seasons — was selected with the No. 92 pick by the Seattle Seahawks. Although every player's dream is to go in the first round, Milroe likely couldn't have gone to a better situation. There is virtually no pressure on him as the Seahawks signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason, and they also have Drew Lock, who has started 28 career games on the roster as well. However, based on ESPN's initial depth chart, Milroe may be climbing the depth chart sooner than most expected. Seattle Seahawks depth chart As reported by ESPN, the Seahawks depth chart goes as follows: QB1: Sam Darnold QB2 Jalen Milroe QB3 Drew Lock If this truly ends up being the case, Milroe has taken major strides following his final season at Alabama. During his last year in Tuscaloosa, Milroe was criticized heavily for forcing passes into windows that weren't there after being late on reads. In his final season at Alabama, Milroe threw a career-high 11 interceptions to just 16 touchdowns, an increase of five more interceptions than he threw in 2023. Although training camp is still ongoing and the preseason games have yet to be played, clearly, Milroe is finding some success in the Pacific Northwest.
According to Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue suffered a bone bruise in his heel on Thursday. Blue was stepped on during practice, initially looking at an ankle sprain. Thankfully, the MRI came back with some positive news. “Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue’s MRI revealed a bone bruise in his heel after it was stepped on in today’s practice, according to a @startelegram source,” Harris said via X. “No ankle sprain. Good news for the young back who has emerged as an offensive playmaker in camp.” Blue previously told Harris that an ankle injury was what he suffered. Questions about the running back’s availability for Saturday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams are now present. Something to watch as kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from SoFi Stadium. Dallas took Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping to address its running back situation. Blue played his college ball inside the Lone Star State, suiting up for the Texas Longhorns. Plenty of guys at the position have come out of Austin and found quick success. Blue is hoping to be the next one. For now, there is an injury for him to deal with. No exact timeline has been provided per a report or by a team official. Hopefully, Blue is able to get things cleared up quickly and get his first taste of the NFL before Sept. 4’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. More on Jaydon Blue, Cowboys running back situation Running back was a position the Cowboys needed to desperately figure out this offseason. Rico Dowdle, the team’s leading rusher, was no longer on the roster. Behind Dowdle, Dallas did not have much else. A nice mix of veteran presence and youngsters was needed. Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders provide the former, while Blue was a part of the draft class alongside Phil Mafah. A combination of those four figures to be on the opening night roster. Exactly how head coach Brian Schottenheimer splits up the carries is not yet known. Blue’s injury certainly does not help the situation. Cowboys players, in general, have been going down throughout training camp thus far. Making sure everyone is healthy will be critical heading into the season. Especially an explosive back like Blue, someone who can change the outcome of any game in just the snap of your fingers.
Tom Brady helping run the show for the Las Vegas Raiders can only benefit the franchise in the long term. According to Albert Breer, who covers the NFL for Sports Illustrated, said that Brady secretly made a trip to Las Vegas to discuss the future of the Raiders’ quarterbacks, RaidersBeat wrote. Brady is on record in May saying that he had no part in the evaluation process for the Raiders’ future signal callers. Although they may not be a true statement. “Even if [Brady] isn’t in there every day, and he’s very sensitive about that, and a story I heard [was] he helped with their quarterback evaluation because obviously, who wouldn’t want Tom [helping in a quarterback search]?” Breer said on the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday. “So he flew in incognito for a day to sit down with the front office and the coaches to go through quarterbacks and look at quarterbacks on tape, and left, and no one knew about it,” Breer continued. “My understanding is the reason why is because he knows if he shows up, he takes all the oxygen out of the room. He knows if he shows up… he doesn’t’ want the perception out there… that he’s lording over everything. But he certainly has an influence of the types of players they are bringing in.” Geno Smith is the guy for now. He will debut as a Raider tonight on NFL Network as his first game for Las Vegas will be in his old stomping grounds, Seattle, as the Raiders and Seahawks battle it out for the first preseason game for both teams. The Raiders will be going with their starters to begin the game. It’s unclear how long Smith and his teammates will play, but head coach Pete Carroll wants to win. Carroll had a blunt message about his return to Seattle tonight.
