Jack Draper is seeking his first Grand Slam title at the 2025 Wimbledon Championship. The 23-year-old is the home favorite to claim the title having been seeded fourth at the tournament and the highest ranked British player. Tennis legend John McEnroe opined on his chances of winning the championship.
Draper opened his Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday (July 1) against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in Court 1. He dominated the match, dropping just five games in a little over an hour before Baez decided to retire from the match due to an injury he had struggled with from the start of the clash.
That gave Draper an easy route to the second round but he will face an experienced Marin Cilic next. Cilic reached the final of Wimbledon in 2017, just three years after stunning the tennis world by claiming his only Grand Slam at the 2014 US Open. However, he has struggled with a knee injury in recent years, but since last season he has been gaining form.
Ahead of Wimbledon, he won the ATP Challenger tournament in Nottingham. In his opening match at SW19, he defeated Raphael Collignon in straight sets. Meanwhile, Draper only reached the semi-finals of the Queen’s Championships, a warm-up tournament, and has not gotten past the second round at the All England Club.
During a conversation on air on BBC Sports, John McEnroe was asked if Draper could win Wimbledon. The tennis legend revealed that he’s currently the fourth favorite to win the title, but still has a chance of winning his maiden Grand Slam this season:
I’m most impressed with how Jack Draper is moving in the last year or so and how much of a factor that is in his rise to number four in the world. Jack Draper is the fourth favorite to win this tournament. He has gotten himself incredibly fit… He could win a major for the first time in his life. This is about dealing with the nerves. That’s pressure but it’s also a pretty cool feeling.
Draper has proven that he can compete with the top players in the ATP this season. He proved that at Indian Wells, when he stunned Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals to claim his first Masters 1000 title. He also reached the finals of the Qatar Open and Madrid Open, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud.
Jack Draper has been dubbed to take over from Andy Murray as the British hero in the men’s circuit. The British star has excelled on hard courts more than any surface this season. On clay and grass courts, he has failed to win anything this season, even though he has had some good runs.
In an interview with The Independent after reaching the second round of Wimbledon, he revealed that he’s yet to find his best level of tennis on grass. He added that he found that on hard and clay courts:
On the hard courts at the US Open, even on the clay this year, I think I found my best level for what I can play right now. I feel like I haven’t yet found that on the grass. I feel like it’s coming, so I’m looking forward to that, that moment when it all sort of comes together and I can really show my best level.
Draper’s only grass tour-level title came at the Stuttgart Open last year after defeating Frances Tiafoe in the final in straight sets. He didn’t compete at the ATP 250 tournament this year as he opted for only the Queen’s Championships before Wimbledon.
