For years, tennis fans were spoiled by the golden era of the Big Three — Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal — who didn’t just dominate the sport but also elevated each other to legendary heights every time they stepped on court. Now, with that chapter closing, a new rivalry has taken center stage: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

The pair have quickly pulled clear of the pack, setting up what looks to be the defining duel of this generation. But while their battles on court are intense and high-stakes, fans can’t help but wonder what things are really like between them away from the spotlight. And recently, Sinner’s coach shed some light on the true nature of their friendship.

While speaking to the Fan Duel Sports Network, Darren Cahill was asked about his star pupil’s relationship with Alcaraz. He shed some light on it saying, “Carlos is a phenom, he is a great guy. What you see on the court is what you see off the court. I would not say they are best friends, but they are very friendly. There is a great friendly rivalry between the two players which I think is healthy.”

Iron Sharpens Iron, as is the Case with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

According to Cahill, the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz is as competitive as it is positive. He explained that the two often train on courts right next to each other, and it’s impossible not to glance over and see what the other camp is working on. “We’re always curious,” Cahill admitted, noting that just as he finds himself watching what Carlos and his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero are doing, Ferrero does the same with Jannik.

For Cahill, this back-and-forth isn’t a bad thing at all — in fact, he believes it’s exactly what tennis needs. Coming off the golden era of Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray, he sees this budding rivalry as the perfect next chapter, one that pushes both players to be better and keeps fans invested in the sport’s future.
