Kiki Bertens, currently ranked No. 9 in the world, took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce that she underwent surgery on her left Achilles tendon and will miss the start of the season, including the 2021 Australian Open.

Ik ga er alles aan doen om zo snel mogelijk sterker en fitter terug te komen Some of you might know that I already had an Achilles injury for some time. The only possibility for me to play without pain again and get the maximum out of trainings and matches was to get a surgery. So that’s what I did now! I will miss the start of 2021, so unfortunately I won’t be competing in Australia. I will try my best to come back stronger as fast as I can can’t wait to see you guys on tour soon again!

As Stephanie Livaudais wrote for the WTA website, the 28-year-old from Holland dealt with Achilles discomfort throughout the 2020 season. Bertens then opted to skip the US Open due to fears related to the coronavirus pandemic and the required quarantine period she would've faced following the tournament.

Ik hoop dat de situatie snel een positieve wending zal krijgen en wens iedereen een goede gezondheid toe # after long consideration I have decided not to go to the states for Cincinnati and the Us open. The situation around COVID-19 is still that worrying and the health of everyone and the control over this virus is priority. Our prime minister indicated yesterday that we should be quarantined for 14 days after coming back from the states. Off course we respect this as a team and this would disturb our preparation for my beloved clay court tournaments in Rome and Paris. I hope the situation will soon take a positive turn and wish everyone good health. Take care!

Bertens did compete in the French Open that was postponed to the fall because of the health crisis. She won her first three matches but suffered an upset loss to Martina Trevisan in the fourth round in what will be her last competitive action for some time.

As Ben Morse noted for CNN, Bertens was accused by some of faking an injury at Roland-Garros after she required a wheelchair to leave the court following her second-round victory over Sara Errani.

"After one hour, she's injured but then she's running around like never before," Errani said to reporters after the match.

"She leaves the court in a chair and now she's in the locker room and eating in the restaurant, perfect. She exaggerated. It made me very angry. So, well done to her, but she can win without doing that."

Bertens explained that she dealt with cramps during the third set.
