Mats Wilander: Alexander Zverev 'will win a major but never dominate like big four'

Mats Wilander says Alexander Zverev does not have the quality of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer, and his shock Australian Open proves it.

Zverev could have finished the tournament with his maiden major and as world number one, but instead crashed out in the fourth round to Denis Shapovalov, meaning he has actually lost ranking points.

The German has been tipped to become a dominating force in tennis ever since he broke through as a teenager, and at times he has looked like the real deal.

Boris Becker has questioned his effort and aggression levels, and now Wilander has agreed that Alexander Zverev looks like he is never going to take the mantle left by Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, and Andy Murray.

“There’s not going to be a big four in this generation,” Wilander told Eurosport.

“There are going to seven, eight, nine, 10 guys that are going to win one of them.

“Sascha Zverev is one of them, Felix-Auger Aliassime, Matteo Berrettini.

“I don’t see the qualities in Zverev that I see in Novak Djokovic or Rafa Nadal or Roger Federer, yet.

“Sascha Zverev is not going to be dominating like them because emotionally today [against Shapovalov] I don’t think he was a top player, to be honest.”
