Mirra Andreeva opens French Open campaign, eases past Cristina Bucsa after tough start

Mirra Andreeva will face either Suzan Lamens or Ashlyn Krueger in the second round of the French Open after taking down Cristina Bucsa to open proceedings on Tuesday at Roland Garros.

Andreeva reached the semi-finals last year at the French Open and comes into the tournament in middling form after reaching the Quarter-Finals in Madrid and Rome. Of course earlier in the year, the now 18-year-old was borderline untouchable in the Middle East portion.

But since then it has not been as easy as she navigates now being a top 10 player. She had to weather an early storm in this one too. Bucsa went 3-0 and 4-2 up and Andreeva had to find something in order to get back on terms. She did with an emphatic end to the set. After holding at 4-3, she broke for 4-4 with an easy break before then forcing the door open breaking for the second time. She won the first 6-4.

Andreeva eased into a 3-1 lead in the second and staved off a break chance from Bucsa in the next game to hold. She only faced adversity from there finishing it off. Andreeva sealed it 6-3 in the end to move on coming from 15-40 down on her serve to claim the win on advantage.

Also through are Nao Hibino who came through qualifying. She saw off Bianca Andreescu on that run. Marketa Vondrousova also made her first appearance in many months and saw off Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-4, 6-4. Victoria Azarenka was also an easy winner over the retiring Yanina Wickmayer in a double bagel.

Coco Gauff to come shortly as well as Jessica Pegula as we continue with the opening ties in Paris. But Andreeva is successfully through so far.
