Misery for Maria Sakkari as poor Grand Slam record continues with three straight first round exits

Many looked towards a potential meeting between former semi-finalists at the French Open between Maria Sakkari and Karolina Muchova but that won't happen as the Greek's horrific Grand Slam record continues.

Sakkari who is about to fall out of the top 100 had shown green shoots of life in recent weeks including a superb win over Jasmine Paolini in Madrid who went on to win Rome.

But while it is same old in regards to rehiring Tom Hill, the same can be said for her poor Grand Slam record. She lost to Elsa Jacquemot who is currently ranked World No.138 and like many French players had to receive a wildcard to get into this tournament.

She took her chance and then some. Sakkari no doubt will be kicking herself as Sakkari served twice for the second set and had two set points. She double faulted also on match point as Jacquemot claimed it 6-3, 7-6(4) to move through. It is the second win of the week in the women's draw for French players.

Sakkari next will play at Libema Open s'Hertogenbosch and while the Greek gets into Wimbledon, she will no doubt be craving some results on grass to alleviate the pressure she likely will get to remain in the top 100.

She has lost first round now in the last three Grand Slams and defends a third round from Wimbledon next month.

While she perhaps didn't expect to go far by taking an early wildcard into Rosmalen, she wouldn't have expected to lose this especially given that she had chances to win the first set which she spurned.

Jacquemot now moves on to face Muchova who herself while formidable on the surface has not played a lot this year and as a result could be one to look out for in terms of upset watch especially with the bit between her teeth after this win.
